I was getting bored of the "everything is a-ok" happy fun world anyway. Some drama will spice life up.

As much as I bitch about things, I have to admit that life in America right now is far better than it was about 70 years ago.  Times were far more tumultuous during the 60s and 70s as well.

Granted, I don't know about you, ATG, but I thought the 90s were our peak as a society.

Honestly I can say that I'm still making good money bar tending in a resort area. Memorial day weekend was equal to last years for our restaurant. The motels and bed and breakfasts around us are booked for the summer. The masses are still driving to the Cape. I have spotted more of you Europeans here thanks to the Euro. But please learn how to tip.

Interesting derail;
What was the peak time of our society?
Do you base that on racial equality? Moral forthrightness? International integrity?

The 90's saw Waco here Genocide there.  Doogie Hoswer was a hit television show. People were buying cable de-scramblers by the millions.

I would define the peak of our society as the moment when Gorge Washington gave his farewell address.

I'm looking mostly at economics.  The economy performed consistently better in the 90s than this decade has or the 80s, 70s, or 60s.  The 50s were comparable in economics, but socially, they were worse by far (segregation).

The 90s were essentially a rare period where economic success and social equality were relatively high.  I'm not saying they were flawless though.

George Washington's time had slavery, so I can't agree with you there.

We are in a recession.  We are in a recession during a time of war, when our spending far outweighs our revenue.  On top of all of this, we are under the wing of quite possibly the worst U.S. president in history.  Our infrastructure is failing, our dollar is weakening, everyday goods are skyrocketing along side of gas and people are losing their jobs.  It will get worse.

But afterwards it will get better again.  Thats how it works in this country.  Look back through a U.S. history book and draw comparisons, buckle down and weather the storm.

So the fact that slaves existed negates the first time in history leadership was passed by freewill and not bloodshed?

Recession? Technically debatable, but perception is 9/10 of reality.

Worst in US history? Debatable as well. Certainly not one of the best, though one could make comparisons between Truman's ending approval rating and Bush's (Truman held the record low until recently).

But overall, you're spot on. Life is cyclical. This too shall pass.

Slavery doesn't negate the positive nature of Washington's relinquishment of power, but we were talking about life in general, not just government.

Considering the fact that only white male landowners could vote, the vast majority of black people in America were slaves, and the vast majority of the populace was poor....  yeah, I'd say the 1990s were better than the 1790s.

Most industries are experiencing a recession right now.  Granted, the oil industry isn't and neither are military contractors.

Recession is the entire economy, not individual industries.

So because Oil and Military contractors are doing fine we aren't in a recession? That doesn't even make sense.
