Not a poll thread - would like some actual input.

My current rig:

Asus P5K motherboard
Intel C2D 4300 @ 3GHZ
Corsair twin2x DDR2 667mhz 2x1GB ram
xfx 8800gt 512mb
Thermaltake toughpower 600w
Thermaltake soprano case
Vista 32 bit - can change to any OS

My plan is this:

short term (within the next month or so) I'll have between 100 to 200 euros to spend. I figured this would be a good time to buy 4GB of ram, replacing the sticks I have now. is anything above PC6400 speeds worth spending extra money on? What kit should I get?

after earning money with my summer job: get a high-end C2D proc. Again, which would be a good choice given a 2-300 euro budget and future developments?

Then: replace CPU fan. Reading reviews has discouraged me from buying pretty much any cooler - they're all said to fail in some way. Which are quiet and awesome, speaking from your experience?

After that I'll be buying some extra internet-acquisition storage space and a new monitor, but I can figure that out by myself.

A solid plan, or not? Do any other parts need upgrading? should I get a better processor first, and then upgrade my RAM?

Any halp given is much appreciated and will be rewarded with internets

Everything else?

This should be in tech

Good Dual Core CPU would be an E8400

PC8500 Is worth it I think if you're not going to overclock your PC6400 Ram. I bought PC8500.

THIS IS EVERYTHING ELSE NOT TECH RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

That being said..

1) DDR2-1066 is really the only memory speed wise I'd consider upgrading to.
2) Can't go wrong with either an E8400 or E8500.
3) Thermaltake V1. It looks weird, but it works FLAWLESSLY. Plus, you don't need to remove your motherboard to put it in.

Sounds good to me. Make sure your board supports 45nm though, otherwise the E8400 won't work and you could always get an E6850.

I posted in the wrong forum, wasn't paying attention. Would appreciate a threadmove mods

Poseidon - http://event.asus.com/mb/45nm/ says my P5k can handle it

So faster ram boosts overclocking potential?

Ah, good. You're set for an E8400 (or Q9300 if you so choose) then.

And faster RAM does increase overclocking potential, yes...just as it does with a CPU. If you have a 3.2 GHz CPU stock, it's naturally going to be able to OC higher than a 2.4 GHz stock CPU.

I could be wrong though, but it's all logical.

When you get the cash first get 4x1gb of pc6400 ram, crucial ballistix or corsair dominators are good but really whatever is cheaper.
Next is storage space (500-1tb samsung spinpoints should do) and the new monitor (22" samsung) -this is the sort of upgrade that you'll actually notice.

Your CPU is fine tbh, if after the above you find you have cash left over and you must spend it then a e8xxx with a cheap freezer 7 pro will do just fine but the jump in performance does not really justify the cost.

EDIT: due to me rereading and realising you have 667mhz ram

What do you use the machine for?

I would upgrade the RAM before the CPU, especially as that could play into the intel price drop, but then, I don't think that is until september.

Wouldnt upgrade anything t'ill Nehalem and 48xx and GTX200, then again, upgrading is different from replacing.

Bell: I use my PC for lots of gaming and as a media center.

So - I'll wait for a new CPU till later this year (that'll probably push it back to november/christmas)

new RAM and cpu cooling first. as far as ram is concerned:

4x1GB 1066mhz option:
http://www.alternate.nl/html/productDet … tno=ICIE87 140 euros
2x2GB 1066mhz option:
http://www.alternate.nl/html/productDet … tno=ICIELB 110 euros
2x2 800mhz
http://www.alternate.nl/html/productDet … tno=ICIEMP 100 euros
4x1 800mhz
http://www.alternate.nl/html/productDet … tno=ICIE85 95 euros

Aries recommends 4x1, I'm not convinced it would do much better than 2x2 though. I like the 2x2GB 1066mhz option

As for cooling, the Thermaltake V1 seems pretty awesome.

After that there's one more thing I need your help with - given the CPU delay I'd like to make my Christmas purchase of a new monitor this summer. What's the best monitor available for, say, under or around 400 euros?

Go for the 2x2 1066 OCZ. Best bang for your buck imo.

And yes, the Thermaltake V1 is VERY .

As for a monitor, I highly highly suggest Samsung. The 2253BW is awesome. Obviously you can't use Newegg, but use this as reference:

There is no performance boost from 4x1gb, I assumed it would be cheaper but no Go for 2x2
