as soon as you realize the fact you won't be running your CPU 10 years, you can move to some real OC...

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

That is scarily hot. That said you seem to keep your stuff for a maximum of about 3 months, so I'm sure it will last that long.

It is a bit hot, what cpu cooler/case/fans do you have? If you've already maxed your cooling solution (or budget) then no real choice but to take the oc down a bit I'm guessing the temp drop to 65 is just your fans kicking in, but 65 is still on the high side.Jenspm wrote:
Ok, it's stable at 3.22GHz, but for some reason it's way too hot now. 70*c load.
How can I lower the temps?
edit - no wait, now the temps show 65*c....
EDIT:just saw your sig Try to upgrade cooling if you can. Some nice scythe 120mm case fans can really help too.

well, 3.22GHz gave me artifacts in 3dmark, so I put it down to 3GHz. It now idles at ~44*c, so it should be good.
I think I'll keep it there, tbh. Should I go down on any voltages?
Now for the RAM - is there a way to check the temps? If not, how do I know when I've "gone to far"?
About case cooling - I have 1x120mm intake and 1x120mm exhaust + 120mm exhaust from PSU. I'll need to do some ghettomodding to get more fans in there. I have an Antec Sonata 2, if anyone has any ideas, post 'em.

Wait what. CPU instability does not cause artifacts, it causes BSODs or crashes. GPU overheating or excessive clocks cause artifactsJenspm wrote:

Putting it down to 3GHz made it work, at least
Idles at 44C? That's pretty hot. My computer idles at about 32 in this hot weather, but is more like 28 in regular weather.
CPU instability can cause artifacts, but it's very rare.Jenspm wrote:

Anyhow, I doubt you really need more power than a 3GHz 45nm quad can give you, Jenspm.

If you've dropped to 3ghz then you should definitely be able to drop voltages on at least one of either fsb, vcore or nb, if not all 3
Always keep voltages as low as stability allows.

argh i hope mine will overclock better than yours tbh Jens

I've had quite a few artifacts before (in CSS, Windows Media Center, etc), where a re-start was the only thing that fixed it. I've always blamed Vista, but I've now concluded that I need a new GFX card.
I've the 4850/70 is cheap, I'll get that, if not, I'll go for a 3870.
Anyway, back to 3.22GHz
Let speedfan log your GPU temps while you run 3dmark.Jenspm wrote:

get a better mobo that can handle the OC'n, other than that, you wont be able to raise the FSB very much, w/o it crashing, and causing problems.
i have a xfx 780i mobo, so that baby can tune good cpu with exceptional temps.

I don't get this...
I get artifacts every time I run the graphics tests on 3dmark @ 3.22GHz, but never elsewhere. I also only get a 100point 3dmark CPU boost (compared to 3GHz).
I've gotten occasional artifacts in wierd programs before (like WMC, etc), but a re-start always helps. However, I get artifacts in the graphics tests of 3dmark every time.
Sounds like overheating. What are your temps on load?Jenspm wrote:
