The price per barrel of oil just smashed its previous record. Many claim that speculation and profiteering are the cause of this rise in price which in my view is a logical assumption. It seems that the U.S. apparently has enough oil reserves to to last the U.S. for a good 7 months as well. Bush is also asking the Saudis to pump more oil, but many say it isn't the answer. He could easily sign an executive order to initiate drilling within U.S. territory and put a temporary end to the rise oil's cost. What do you think?

Alaska will get environmentally raped.  Dystroy OPEC or look into viable alternatives.  Problem is goverment stooges are in the pockets of the big oil companies.

While I think we need to stabilize fuel prices, I don't think we want to go back to making it very cheap again.

the liberal democrat controlled congress is to blame.  plus environmentally rape Alaska ??? you must not know shit. ask anyone that lives in Alaska about the pipeline and the wildlife there. the boundary's set for hunting the caribou and moose . tree hugging retards have no clue about the wilderness of Alaska and anwar wildlife refuge. there is more oil there than all of the middle east . and they can do it so efficiently without hurting any wildlife. why wait for china to take over and then not be so careful ??

Wait there why i'll pick up the phone and ask my uncle Jamal in Alsaka what he knows....errr dang i don't really have a uncle Jamal and oops i also don't know anyone in Alaska!  My point is the general reasoning is Alaska would be environmentally raped, so go on ask me if i really give a hoot about Alaska or in fact the USA?! Ask me And environment also refers more than hairy deer, it also encompasses marine life and the continental shelf.  The Aleutian Islands are a hot bed of movement of the tectonic plates, wanna really put a platform there?

And by the way the U.S. Interior Department's decision has as of today declared the polar bear as a threatened species.  You can kiss goodbye to any oil extraction now, that cuddly white thing is probably the de facto reason preventing the oil companies marching in.

And lastly Alaska is one the last places on Earth that is pristine and untouched by the serial rapist that is man.  Is it too hard to let the tree huggers keep it that away? The rest of the planet has been buggered to kingdom come for god sake.

Only the ill informed still call it global warming. Changes in the Earth temperature and its consequences is known as Climate change i.e. brrrrrrr! the cold.  Ever heard of the ice age? There were 2 of em you knows!

It wouldn't fuck up the environment totally, but it would fuck it up. Personally, they should do it. Just to stop being reliant on Mooj's - but what they (everyone) really should do is become less reliant on crude oil altogether. There's plenty of alternatives out there to fuel/lubricate our cars and power stations (and make plastics and other crude oil shit). The only thing I can't see is a viable alternative to fuel jet engines

Course it will never happen as long as the Oil Corporations are able to stop it.

Schittloaf never ceases to amuse....

Anyway, we need to do more domestic drilling while enforcing environmental protection laws.  As long as the EPA functions the way it's supposed to, then there shouldn't be a problem with drilling in ANWR.

Of course, for the EPA to function properly, we'd need to remove the current "pro-human testing of pesticides" administrator of the EPA.

For the record, there really is no debate that global warming is happening.  The debate is on how much of an influence we have on an already existent cycle.

I tend to believe we have more influence on this cycle than oil companies would have you believe, but it's probably less significant than Al Gore would have you believe.

Not to get off topic here, but ironically, only recently have scientists discovered evidence of "Global Cooling." People need to get their shit together and make up their mind already. Anyways, back on topic:

From what I've understand, the drilling in and around the Alaskan refuge has started, stopped, started, etc. What will it take to consistently drill there without any delays?

It would take a Congress with the wisdom to embrace more domestic oil production, less foreign oil dependency, and consistent and sensible environmental protection regulations.

In other words, it's not going to happen...  at least...  the odds are against it....

You are definitely right, this article was just typed today:

http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id … _article=1

But then again, this is kind of where the speculators come in. The current price of oil doesn't completely reflect how much we should be actually paying for each barrel of oil.

Although they did specifically state that this would have no impact whatsoever on oil extraction in Alaska.

The real problem here is that now too many people use oil. Supply is fairly constant and demand is skyrocketing. This is predominantly due to increasing industrialisation of nations like China and India and global increases in car ownership. OPEC does not help matters by acting like greedy cunts. Drilling oil faster is certainly not a solution, since we can't match the increased demand by increasing supply because the rate would not be sustainable and the costs of increasing production at that rate would outweigh the reduction in oil prices, so the price at the pump would continue to rise despite reductions in the price per barrel. The real concern for much of the rest of the world is if/when the dollar recovers fuel prices will jump up enormously.

Solution?

1. Renewables! How better to get out of the pockets of the multinationals than to make your own power?
2. LNG/LPG (depending on where you live I think). Cheaper, less polluting, decent rebates (here at least). Add that to a small car and yeh.
3. General efficiency. Do we really need to leave office lights blazing after everyone's gone home?
