UK, May 9, 2008 - Codemasters today revealed it has acquired the Formula 1 licence, ending Sony's four year ownership of the franchise and paving the way for a new series of current generation F1 titles across all major formats.

Chris Deering, chairman at Codemasters said, "[Our] success and recent innovations in the racing game space makes the company more than appropriately tuned for the challenge. The combination of FORMULA 1's new momentum of expansion and Codemasters' contemporary technology and past experience is the breaking of a new dawn for the sport, on the track and on the HD game screen."

Having remained dormant since last year's Studio Liverpool PlayStation 3 title Formula 1 Championship Edition, the news comes following murmurings that Sony were effectively being priced out of the licence by Bernie Ecclestone's Formula One Association. Any future title will mark the first time an official Formula One title has been seen outside Sony hardware since EA offered up Formula 1 Career Challenge in 2003.

As of yet it is unknown when we can expect the first fruits of the new deal, though a statement today suggested it will utilize the EGO engine that Codemasters has put to good effect in the forthcoming GRID game.
This sounds great, but let's hope they make it a great racing simulator, like DiRT, and not some arcady shit like GRID.

The EGO engine is powerful enough, I just hope they make it realistic and awesome, like Forza, rFactor and GT5.

PS - based on how Codemasters have worked on previous titles (mainly DiRT), I'm glad they got the Licence, and not EA

btw, sauce

No info yet about the platform, but CodeMasters have released previous titles (DiRT, GRID) on both consoles + PC, and I don't see a reason to stop that great tradition

I don't think it'll come anywhere near as close as F1 Championship edition on the PS3, I wish SCEE had kept the license. Now we're going to see shitty Multiplat games geared towards American audiences with bucketloads of HDR, arcadey physics and heavy metal music

Mhmm...not sure how good this will be.

For a start, an game creation starting in 2008 will not reminisce 2009 or 2010 modeled cars, which is when the game is "due to be released". I fear that this game will have an 'arcade' feel and not a realism feel. And the fact that they are being helped by SEGA doesn't make my hopes any higher..

Anyway, until "late 2009" I'll just be playing MMG F1 on rFactor then

I'm also afraid of it being to arcady, but DiRT was pretty damn good.

Mhmm...I un-installed it after a while (before I finished) - it just didn't hold my excitement...very arcade-y at some parts. But in its own right it was very well designed, GUI was nice but took forever to just load a race.

Toca Race Driver was an amazing simulator, surely they can do the same with the F1 license.
