Since this PC is getting a bit old these days I thought that once my exams are finished in about half a month I would splash out on a completely new pc. However seeing as I know nothing about PC parts I have only a rough idea of what is good or bad and I was hoping some people on here might be able to give me some advice on wht to buy.

I have a budget of around £750 and I need pretty much everything... except a monitor (although could use one of those as well) and mouse.

I will probably be buying from scan as I have free postage from them.

I have someone who can put it together for me

Thanks for any advice!

A 512mb 8800gts is the only thing you should definitely include.

Case depends on taste really.
Motherboard- SLI is a bit much for your budget so go for a cheap asus p5 or gigabyte p35.
Hard drives - samsung spinpoints
DVD drives -liteon anything
PSU- Depends on what you wanna upgrade with in future but a corsair 620W is good for now
RAM- 2GB of anything for XP, 4gb if you wanna go vista
CPU- E7200, E6750, Q6600, depending on what you wanna do with it.

That should leave more than enough for a nice monitor- A 22" samsung is a good choice

£ is stronger than the Euro so it will get him an even nicer set-up

Solid build, obviously change the case to suit your taste etc, maybe even get a dif kboard.

Only £80 over budget too

I'd switch the nine hundred for something else - for a gaming machine use an E7200 over the Q9300 and get a P35 mobo.

Never go nForce if you're not gonna go SLI 100%. The downsides outweigh the upsides.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

holy hell don't get the Asus P5N32-E SLi...

for 750 I doubt he needs SLi anyway...

like DU said, Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R will be just fine.

damn right. I can't recommend any AMD CPU atm because Intel >>>>>> AMD in same price range.
