I've never used wireless before (im so old school) but how do you get wireless to work on ur computer? we just got a modem/router (w/e it is) and it supports wireless connection. But how do I set it up on my computer? Is it like a driver for the motherboard or something?

pci wireless internet cards are cheap , under $20 bucks , pick one up at any store , install drivers 1st then install in a empty pci slot , start comp , comp should pick it up and install it.

something to look for also are the wireless usb devices (size of a thumb drive). For example: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6833314026

At least this way you can put it on whatever machine you want (granted it has usb 2.0 )

What's the internet speed like with one of those?  Does the USB interface slow it down at all (compared to a PCI card)?

the network transfer is slower than the usb bus. They probably aren't as a fast as pci, but you would never see the difference unless doing a large sustained file copy over a network. I have a couple, they are great (not that brand).

I have been using a USB Wireless adapter for probably 2/3 years now.

Internet speeds are nowhere near even wireless network speeds (up to 54mbps on G, not talking about N even).

you are not getting "54mpbs" on usb or pci ... its some theoretically limit you will never hit.

Couldnt be bothered writing out "it normally is this speed which is still faster than blah" etc

If you can possibly avoid it, don't use wireless with a desktop. If it can't be avoided, then you either need a wireless PCI card or USB adapter.

Make sure it corresponds with the wireless network type of the router, IE 802.11g, b, n, so on and so forth. Usually you can get a PCI card for cheap that will work with 2-3 different types. Takes a gander around your local store.

A few questions need to be answered....

Do you have a wireless card or usb wireless adapter for your pc?
How far away is your computer in relation to the router?
Are you planning on gaming with this connection?

I can give you some ideas on what to do if you answer these questions.

Edit:  k after reading the first few replies here is what I would say: Get a wireless card.  They are relatively cheap.  Look here for those.  You will also have to protect your wireless network so I would suggest using WPA-2 security.  If you don't understand that, I can give you a quick tutorial on how to set that up.

Me thinks wireless isn't good for online games.
