But I was wondering about learning bass guitar as well (I hope you don't mean double bass, anyway). Good luck!

As for help, since I know you're in the UK (Birmingham, too) if you can get yourself down to a few shops, that'd be really good. I know there's a great guitar place just off Mell Square in Solihull - ask if you need help with that and other places around. If you just want to look on the internet http://www.playrecord.net/guitars/index.22.html say you can always ask them for advice... no harm trying, I suppose, and other websites do try to give impartial advice sometimes.

All the best,

How much are you willing to spend? You can look at starter packs like this

No sense wasting your money on a good rig right now. Just get something playable with a small amp. A lot of people drop it after a few months because bass can be pretty boring on its own. You don't want to blow a huge wad of cash on something you're not sure you'll stick with.

Good luck and welcome to the world of bass players. I know there are a bunch of us on the forums. ATG and I both play. I've seen others mention it but don't remember anyone else by name.

Those Epiphone packs are great. That's a nice SG bass.
But tbh, learn electric, it's more rewarding. You feel like you've actually learned something useful, and it can sound really nice. To me, bass is too easy. The notes sound basically the same, you stand in the back of the band, and people can hardly hear you.

I hear (note the "hear," not totally sure) that Epiphone/Gibson Basses are for the most part, not that great. Look into a Squier pack, I've seen a lot of decent reviews of the Affinity J-Bass which apparently has decent bang for the buck.

Bass can be really difficult though. To be honest, Bass/Rhythm guitar are as important and fulfilling as any lead/solo guitar. A lot of solos sound out of place without background rhythm.

Yes, that's true. Pure rhythm and eletric guitar sounds terrible. It has too much treble.
I just think if you want to learn guitar, go with a 6 string electric.

I'm learning from Mel Bay's Modern Guitar Method's 1 book, and it's helped me alot.
