I hear (note the "hear," not totally sure) that Epiphone/Gibson Basses are for the most part, not that great. Look into a Squier pack, I've seen a lot of decent reviews of the Affinity J-Bass which apparently has decent bang for the buck.Ryan wrote:

But tbh, learn electric, it's more rewarding. You feel like you've actually learned something useful, and it can sound really nice. To me, bass is too easy. The notes sound basically the same, you stand in the back of the band, and people can hardly hear you.
Yes, that's true. Pure rhythm and eletric guitar sounds terrible. It has too much treble.Smithereener wrote:
Bass can be really difficult though. To be honest, Bass/Rhythm guitar are as important and fulfilling as any lead/solo guitar. A lot of solos sound out of place without background rhythm.
