I've been reading many of the posts about 1.2 and have witheld most of my comments because I wanted to give the patch a fair shot. So after playing for several days I have come to several conclusions about this patch. In short, it seems that many of the changes are both arbitrary and unnatural.
ar·bi·trar·y - adj. - Determined by chance, whim, or impulse, and not by necessity, reason, or principle
I hated bunny hoppers as much as anyone, but the arbitrary delays on going prone and standing up cause the game to lose its natural feel and immersion. I feel like I have to wait for some artificial timer before making a move now... 3, 2, 1 prone... 3, 2, 1 stand up... The same holds true for being medic and using this silly new 'shared charge' idea where if you drop med packs you magically can't revive anyone. It seems like a silly and random solution to the perceived problem that medics were getting too many points.
The same holds true for C4 placement and trigger switching. Place C4... 3... 2... 1... place another... press the switch to trigger button... 3... 2... press it again because it doesn't seem to have worked... oh shit, now I'm back to C4... 3... 2... <death by tank>
The same is true for shooting while jumping. If you make the 'tragic mistake' of pressing the fire button a millisecond before you land, you have to let up and press it again. This is arbitrary, artificial, and a piss poor solution for a problem.
un·nat·u·ral - adj. - In violation of a natural law. Inconsistent with an individual pattern or custom. Contrived or constrained; artificial
These seemingly subtle changes completely change the feel for those of us who are 'twitch' players. (which by now is most of us) I think about doing something and my hands automatically do it without thinking about the mechanics of things... to play otherwise feels very deliberate and mechanical and not much fun.
Everything also feels very slow and sluggish now. I'm not sure if I'm getting lower FPS now (I do have two 7800GTX cards running in SLI so I damn sure hope not) or if sprint times are shorter, if if it's just the slowness of the prone/stand transitions but it just feels like the whole game is running through mollases now.
The lack of sounds from people shooting, the TOW missles going through targets, etc. are all blatant bugs which will hopefully be adressed. But the issues I've mentioned above (except the possible drop in FPS) are appearantly the DESIRED outcome of this patch and I couldn't be more disappointed.
I'm not here to debate if the AA is too strong, if the PKM is too strong, whether choppers are too nerfed or not nerfed enough... I'm here to discuss the arbitrary, artificial, and unnatural 'fixes' they made to what were admittedly problems.
I'm also not here to bitch/whine without at least trying to offer suggestions; so here goes:
C4 Chuckers: keep the trigger switch times as they were but fix the animation bug (you had the trigger selected but it appears you really threw another C4 pack)
Medics healing too fast: Just slow down the shock paddle recharge time and/or health pack recharge. The sharing thing is confusing and silly and most people still don't understand it.
Bunny hoppers: make shooting while jumping innacurate but adjust the accuracy once you land. At least if you make the 'terrible mistake' of beginning to fire while in the air, you will continue to fire and become more accurate once your feet are on the ground.
I don't have all the answers, but the so-called 'answers' we were given in 1.2 are pretty piss poor. I'm not here to bash EA/Dice and I think they've done an amazing job overall. I just think they have really missed the boat on this patch. Sorry for being so long-winded.
Thoughts? Input? Rants? Better solutions?
