So, about that redefinition of the word naive (I cbf finding the accents this time)...
The paradox is only a conflict between reality and your feeling what reality ought to be.

A lot of the US backed regiemes, (El Salvador, Guatemala, Phillipines, Suharto, Colombian paramillitaries, Pinochet, Diem, Saddam, the Shah etc, etc, ) were some of the worst fuckers to ever to live, many of the so called 'communist' regiemes were pretty decent places in comparison. To put it bluntly, I'd rather have lived in Poland under the Soviets than in El Salvador under the US supported dictatorship.
The reasons are the same as the rest of the rich and powerful nations. Desire for more wealth and power and disinterest in the populace of their own country or anyone else's. The US/UK invaded Iraq to take control of the vast oil wealth there.
where should i start?rammunition wrote:

there is the Iraq/Iran conflict but who gave the chemical weapons to Saddam to use on the Iranians????
He asked for post WWII, and i think the people killed at the Berlin wall numbered in the hundreds, not the bazillions he thinks we kill every dayKmarion wrote:

I was referring to the chemical weapons distribution.S.Lythberg wrote:

well, he neglected to mention the millions of tons of sarin nerve gas the soviets sold to questionable buyers (see yakuza), so I figured arms dealers were exempt from criticism too...Kmarion wrote:

Ya, I touched on some of the other countries as well. http://forums.bf2s.com/viewtopic.php?pi … 1#p2043381S.Lythberg wrote:

Most of the claimed actions taken to prevent communism turned out to have nothing to do with communism. Communism was a term aimed at any country that tried to develop any independent development to justify attacks/coups.pierro wrote:

Well for starters, the US killed about as many people in Cambodia as Pol Pot did. It's very hard to tell how many people died as a result of Pol Pot because so many people were dying as a result of the aftermath of the US bombing from starvation and disease. The US also supported trying to get the Kymer Rouge back into power after the Vietnameese put a stop to him.pierro wrote:
-I am not trying to sugar coat what the Americans have done...but nothing can compare to the injustices of Mao, Pol Pot, Stalin etc... and you have to realize the context of the time...they were fighting Communism and they succeeded (whether this contributed is up to debate)...while some of the right wing authoritarian regimes they propped up were bad, all of Communism was bad...you just can't put the two on the same level
Dissidence in Soviet block countries resulted in arrests, trials, humiliation, interrogations, re-arrests etc. In a large number of US backed dictatorships, dissidents were lucky if their families survived to begin the task of finding all of their body parts.pierro wrote:
-Also, Poland had far more infrastructure, educated population then when the Commies came in then El Salvador so that isn't really a fair comparison
Iran has some form of defence. Iraq didn't and therefore represented a much better target as a result of the brutal sanctions that Iraq has been under. Plus Iraq has more oil. The other question is why not the brutal, opressive monarchy in Saudi Arabia? The answer is that they are happy to go along with US interests, hence no calls for overthrowing them and creating a democracy.pierro wrote:
-Also, if it were about oil then why not Iran (as was mentioned in the post above)
