Yep; that could very well give nVidia run for their money.

Very nice. Seems like AMD is coming out with a new evolution of graphics cards every month. I suppose it's slowly time to drop nvidia (with their pos drivers that crash all the time) and go back to "big red"
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

I never left "big red". From my X800XT 256MB to what I have been on for over a year now; Radeon X1900XT 512MB. It does the job fine; I have no need to upgrade yet. Plus, my motherboard is Crossfire so I'm naturally lenient to ATI because I sometimes find the same card for really cheap and then go into what is essentially geek mode.

Wait.... does this mean I can get CrossfireX for really cheap?

I have waited this ATi's new comeback for a long time now. Now that they got the driver issues sorted out (I have pre-release Catalyst 8.4 and it is awsome) they are really pushing nVIDIA. It has been around for a while now that nVIDIA has nothing to counter this RV770 rech release atm. This will really make some action on the green camp since their g92 die shrink isn't even released yet. And that just can't beat the new RV770 because of low number of shader processors.

There are rumors about the GT100/200 but one must wonder why they choose to release a slower product (g92 die shrink) IF they had something to beat ATi. I'm sure they have the 'emergency' case somewhere around with protopyte of GT100 tho.

Latest dissappointments with nvidia's new cards was enough for me to support ATi again. SLi didn't scale as well it was ment to in the GX2 for example (even 9800GTX performing about the same in few games!).

Also I would like to point out one thing that ATi made possible:

In case you guys haven't figured it out already...

You can finally get good gfx cards at LOW END price. ATi HD 3850 and HD 3870 prices will drop to low end range when these ones are released. Imagive hot much better HD3850 at <$100 is than some piece of crap older generation low-end cards.

I already saw one Asus HD3870x2 being sold at 270€ after some minor OC use by one of the OC guru's that work for Foxconn here. I can imagine how cheap it will be when these come out.

And...

Not to dampen all this, but, wouldnt this be the third incarnation of this chip desing?

I mean we had 2900XT (R600) > 3850/70 (R670) > 4870 (R770).

Which, I mean, from my point of view, I would like to see some real new tech.  With that said though, a highly polished card, shouldnt have much in the way of driver trouble, not much excuse for teething issues.

Hey, if it outperforms a 9800GTX, is cheaper, and available by the time I build, I'm in.

nVIDIA is using even older tech atm... based on G80... ATi did some bigger changes with R600 -> RV670

EDIT: And every new chip is different when it comes to drivers... otherwise 9800gx2 wouldn't have driver problems... same thing with the radenon x2 had.

Not disputing what nvidia is doing.  My point was specifically to do with ATI.

It's about bloody time!!  I'm sick of these crappy NV drivers, and ATi has finally figured out that they spent way too many transistors on shading capabilities, but current games still need more raw pixel pusing power.  It looks like they've doubled the number of TMUs, but we'll have to see how that works out because they haven't changed the number of ROPs.

Wow 300 dollars for the 4870 (175 euros), thats is quiet cheap! The current HD3870 costs around 170 atm

I am sure it will, but just look at the difference with nVidia. Ati releases a new series and it has around the same prices as the previous series, but when nVidia launches a new series they are instantly 150+ dollars more expensive. Go Ati ^ ^

they sell it for 300 euros just as easily. seeing in the US a 3870X2 = 440 dollars and here 389 euros.

the $ € logos mean jack shit lately.

Absolutely true. I am not expecting the 4870 to be 180 euros. They will probably make it 250 to start with. As they allways do, just as with the 9800GX2, which is $800 dollars when you convert it to dollars. But still the idea of ATI making their new series as cheap/expensive whatever suits you best is a good one

Great! I'm an nVidia user myself but this is nothing negative. It could either whipe the GeForce cards away (not very likely but you never know), and especially for it's price, or it could just perform a bit worse/the same and then there would be competition so all prices drop.
Win/win situation

All this new graphics card talk... I'm still running my ATI x850 XT 256MB. Can even play Crysis on low/medium settings at a reasonable resolution and any other game just fine. I think people get caught up in the "big and badder" battle between nVidia and ATI, but the fact remains that you can buy a cheap 8800 or ATI series right now, and it will still play newly released games three years from now without a problem.

Nah we're just tech enthusiasts I guess. Nothing about getting caught up in a hype (atleast for me it isn't).
