"Remove religion from society, it'll be a better place"

I have seen this basic idea thrown around in a bunch of threads, and I wonder: Is that a reasonable prospect?

So I ask:  If religion never existed, would the world be different?

I think that war, persecution, hate, etc... would all still exist, but with a different 'justification'.  Essentially, it would be a case of "meet the new world, same as the old world".  What do you guys think?

If it never existed? Hmm. I have a feeling the world would be pretty shitty. People think religion causes wars...but if we had NO religion, people would have nothing to care about when they died and just say "Fuck it". I know morals really didn't come directly from religion, but they certainly helped enact them a bit further.

We'd be worse off.

I'd think it'd be the same. Humans have always found things to fight about, religion is just one of them. Perhaps society's standards and morals would be vastly different, but it wouldn't neccessarily mean that we'd be better off. Oh Brave New World...

Whether we like it or not, it's difficult to deny that like all other things in the world, religion has brought in a lot of good as well as the bad.

No, some people are to ___________ (not sure what the proper word would be here) to give their lives purpose without religion.

Religion is one of many reasons for hate and persecution, and to think those would be non-existent with a religion less world is laughably ignorant.

Apathetic?

I think that if religion never existed, the power and influence that it would have had would simply be occupied by something else.

I think the world would be less polarised without religion.

that's a really dumb way to look at it. how the hell would people have nothing to care about? i guess their families and jobs aren't important, and the whole meaning of life is to get to heaven

Removing fanatical religion would be nice, but it would just crop up again later.  Removing all religion wouldn't solve anything and would be impossible anyway.

well i think that is part of the problem, when people act nice and are 'happy' just to get in God's good books and go to a place that might not exist.Maybe if there were no religion, people could have a greater love for other people, rather than just because God says so.

I detest this idea that believing in a god or not creates a whole different section of humanity that performs everything in relation to that diety. Normal folk don't operate with that idea in mind 24/7 and in my case, I can't recall any instance of "Hmmm, this'll show God that I'm good."

Apparentely you didn't understand what I meant...when people were to kill someone, they wouldn't have any reason not to. They'd just do it.

Just to start, we would of figured we weren't* in the center of the universe long ago.

I say tech would be way more advanced.
