When I play midskilled EU mixes though the only assualt rifle you really see is the ak47, in NA mixes you see a lot more M4's.
I vote AK-47, all around good rifle, high damage, okay fire rate. M4 is a close second with low recoil and and a good fire rate and damage.
my personal experience is that the m16 is vastly superior to any other gun in the game when Red Dot is applied. I have played seven rifles to red tiger and every other weapon to blue tiger, the m16 was both the easiest and fastest; not to mention it felt highly overpowered.
as far as fully automatic rifles, the m4 gets my vote.
I prefer the g3 for most occasions, regardless of the m16's power.

Seems like you do not really have much competition experience, judging from the fact that you are using the word campers. The competitions are played by one team camping with other trying to stop the camping team to get into position. Once a team sets his footing in position, it is very hard to rush in without casualty.
Even though M16 does have better chance at hitting target at longer ranges due to the burst effect and its deadly accurateness, M16 at range most likely will not kill a target with a single burst due to the fact that third round almost always will not land on target due to recoil or from crossfire from enemy. Sniper Rifle will bring down a target in one shot in most areas at any range. AR users would not want to play sniping game with already positioned snipers, they will force snipers to move to another location so that they have a better chance to shoot with the fact that Sniper Rifle takes longer to pull aim, or close in on them as much as possible with a lot of obstruction in view.
My highest streaks 50+ have been with m16 with red dot. 3 shots to the cheast = death.

If you read my original post, you will see that it has nothing to do with the pubbing.

I voted for the M16A4. For several reasons.
In my opinion it looks the best, especially when on full high settings. It also has the unbeatable CQB burst feuture, making it shoot faster then the other ARs, (try double tap for extreme own4ge).
All the other rifle are good too, but I do the best with the M16A4. The M4A1 is good too, but it would seem with stopping power it equals up with the M16, meaning the M16 is a real beast. Anyway, I also am a huge fan of the U.S. Marine Corps and they just happen to use this rifle. I also go shooting alot, and the M16 is more accuarate, and controllable then any other weapon I've fired. Even if it does jam once in a spell. But if you keep it clean it won't, and it's not hard to clean.
So in COD4, my favorite "Kit" or "Class" or whatever you want to call it would be this:
Plain ol M16A4 [edit] and ACOG of course [/edit] , no camo, M9 or M1911A1, bandolier, any of the No2 Perks, and dead silence on perk 3.

Hmm, depends. If it's an open map, M16 has the accuracy burst after burst - so easy to get headshots with it!
