I have had the Z-5500's and they broke after one day. Got a brand new replacement set and they broke again. So I would rather stay away from them.

What is the next best set of speakers like this. I have heard good things about the Bose Companion 5 speakers. And some stuff saying they are over priced and rubbish.

Budget about £200. I have a Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Platinum Fatal1ty 7.1 Champion Series Sound Card.

FIND ME SOME NICE SPEAKERS!

How about you go for cinema speakers this time instead of 'gaming' speakers? eg. a nice set of Onix / BOSE etc..

That's typical bose.

Big ass subwoofer, small speakers = crystal clear sound.

I'll vote against Bose.  I've had a few sets of their larger speakers, and I've just not been super pleased with any of them.  IMO, they've earned their negative reputation.  "No highs, no lows?  Must be Bose".  Every set I've used were not satisfactory on their own.  It took blending them in with speakers sporting better highs and lows.

I'm not a big fan of the Logitech speakers either.  I have a set of 5500s currently, and I've had other Logitech sets.  I got the 5500s based on what I can in hindsight only assume were the opinions/reviews of teenagers, as the only thing thing these speakers  produce easily is the repetitive bass-heavy thumps.  Turn most of the bass off, and twiddle all the e-knobs, and yes, you can get a decent sound out of them.  Not great, just decent.  They're only worth keeping because I got them for about 60% off a couple years back.

Poseidon recommends a great set of speakers.  I have a friend with those, and I've always liked how they sound.  Very good range for their size.  Probably will be my next set, as I'm completely over 5.1 computing.

My own personal rule for speakers is to never buy a set without hearing them in as similar a setup as I can to my own.

I wouldn't bypass it, I would replace it.  Find an in-line fuse the same rating, and solder it in.  Assuming that's possible given space limitations etc.  I haven't had need to take this set apart yet, but that fuse type should have easy enough to access leads on the backside.  If you haven't soldered much, I'd consider asking a friend that has.

Heres a tip if you're looking for good speakers. Go for "monitors" or anything that has studio in it.

If you know where it is (probably in the sub), either replace it with a bigger fuse, or connect the wires directly.

Almost every sound system imaginable installs fuses well below the rated capacity of your system.

Blow-outs are generally caused by your computer's output voltage being too high, although many factors can cause them.  You can always try lowering the PC volume, and increasing the speaker volume.
