Was just listening to the radio there, and heard the story about an 89 year old war veteran, who's going blind, but, treatment could stop the blindness. He still sounded very sprightly, he flew bombers for four years during the second world war, after the war worked all his life and payed his taxs, never a single sick day in hospital the enrite time, and they won't give him the treatment - until he completely looses the vision in one eye!! un-fucking believable, seriously what's happened to the NHS? and all the government would do was hide behind " health trusts " saying it was not their decision to make so he and his wife are selling their home to pay for the treatment..

They're trying to run it more like a business and it's having the predictable outcomes....

From what I understand, France has the best healthcare system, but they also pay a lot more in taxes than the U.S. or the U.K.

well surely it makes greater "business sense" for the person to keep their eyesight rather than being the burden of a blind person on social services. non? that's besides the point anyway.. It's a still a fucking disgrace that a man who served his country, and worked all his life is denied the benefit of a treatment by the health service unless they sell their home.. shame on you Labour you're a disgrace to the socialist ideals your party is supposed to represent!!

I couldn't agree more but sadly this is how it works in many countries - it's about money and capacity, doctors must each day make priorities as to who they operate ... if the choice is between a 25 year old and a 89 year old they chose the patient with most of the life in front of him rather than the old man that possibly don't need both eyes for the rest of his.

For the majority the system works just fine but one sadly gets the odd cases where people certainly deserves it but don't get it

In the US, he would've been treated, free of charge. He's a veteran. Under VA (and most any private health care plan here), potential loss of life, limb, or eyesight is automatically covered.

But the US health care system sucks compared to the Holy NHS.

Do you have to pay for an operation or treatment when you have an accident?

Depends on what your health coverage is.

You will be treated, regardless. It is illegal for hospitals to refuse treatment based solely on a patient's ability to pay...particularly in emergent situations.

It's all fucked up and makes me angry.

They can't spend a few thousand £ to save a veterans eyesight.

But they can spend £100,000,000 (so far) to national a failing bank.

That's called an investment. The bank may make money, the veteran not so much...

Sad fact of life I'm afraid.

What you say is true.

But the veteran has already done more than enough for his country.

It's a disgrace that he has to go blind before he gets treatment.

It's a good job he didn't say wait until the Nazi's get here, then I'll fight 'em.

an investment? what the fuck do you call flying bombers for 4 years during world war two, and paying your stamp all your working life? eh? that man has paid for this treatment many times!!! yet the government will spend millions on health care for immigrants who have contributed fuck all to this society, unlike like those who have paid for in blood and receive nothing..

But you will go home with a great big medical bill. Half of US bankrupcy cases are due to medical expenses, of which 3/4 actually had medical insurance at the onset of the illness.

If they hadn't privatised the health service through the back door, we wouldn't have this problem. They took the traditional command structure of medically trained personnel at every level of management and brought in 'managers' who basically know fuck all about medial issues, only managerial skills. These people specialize in saving money and meeting targets by cutting back. I would hazard a guess that all these new Managers and consultants who are making a fortune are costing as much as they save. Plus, health care is not supposed to be a fucking business, its why I pay national insurance.
All these supper bugs which are hitting our hospitals have only come in since these managers came in. So they are failing. Get the fuck rid of them. 100s of people die every year because they cant keep the fucking hospitals clean. Each ward used to be run by a Matron. Who was typically a hard ass bitch with 30-40 years experience working in hospitals, who was responsible for everything within that ward. Now they have been replaced by people who did Business Management at university, who know nothing of what goes on on the ward floor.

The current government is Labour, which was founded on socialist principles and when you vote labour you vote for this principle. They have shit all over those principles with spin and glitz as a smoke screen, so the public don't see them change into out and out capitalists. They either go full capitalist or nothing IMO. I don't mind stopping paying national insurance and going private, but I ain't doing both. This dilly dallying between the two is fucking the country up.

Tony Blair=Bastard son of Maggie Thatcher & Alan Bastard.

I'm sure every family has stories of failures from the health service.here's mine.
My uncle has been in bed for months because his nervous system is shoot to bits. He had two bad car wreaks. The nerves in his spine are severed and rubbing against each other, he is in total agony. They won't see him. They said 4months wait for an X-Ray. But you can go private they advised him, this will speed it up. So he went and got the X-Ray and CAT scans done.........£9000 it cost. Then he phones to say can he bring in the results and be looked at. They tell him it will be 4months until someone can look at them!!!! So basically he payed the money but gets no further forward.

Want better health care? Pay more taxes. Want this capitalist health care? Keep payin' what you're payin'.

I believe Sweden has one of the best health care systems in Europe, but on the other hand you pay 60%+ taxes...

I'm going to have to ask for a source that shows 50% of US bankruptcy cases are due to medical expenses.

Sure. Except it doesn't seem to account for other factors contributing to bankruptcy (high pre-existing debt, etc). Add to that the laws that allow bankruptcy to be filed on pretty much a whim, and the data are skewed.
