...and what a surprise!
I asked for either orange bawks, or guitar hero 3. I receive my gift today (even though my birthday is next week, turning 16), and it is a box wrapped in orange gift wrap, about the size of a PC game.

Sweet I got orange box. I open it up, and as I should have known, just a random box with a note inside. The note says that I have to use several hints to find my gift. My mom always does the coolest gift ideas

Anyways, I head up stairs, and after a few minute search, low and behold, there's a giant box in my parents closet. I pull it out, and this is what I found:

A brand fricken new guitar! I wanted a guitar for christmas, but I got one for my birthday! It's an Epiphone Les Paul Special II.

I even got an amp!

I am so pumped to learn how to play this thing, tune it and what not. One question though, I do I get it to make that electric sound like metal bands and hard rock bands do? I'm brand new to this and have much to learn, so feel free to help in anyway you can.

A Clever hiding place was their closet?  I give her a B+ on creativity, but a D for execution.

Anyway, Congrats man, looks killer.

i told you it was priced well enough awesome guitar man, I really need to practice more so I can "graduate" to a better one...

the metal sound, fool around with the distortion (gain) settings on the amp. Make sure to turn down the volume when you do this though.

Usually changing the settings on the amp will change the sound to have more distortion like some heavy metal bands. also playstyle influences the sound as well.
Shocking
sorry you feel that way

They hid the amp in the basement, underneath a bunch of boxes, but I never root around in there closet, so I would have never guessed.

metal sound? use the lower set of pickups, and turn gain all the way up, tone all the way up.

A real guitar is 100 times better than a video game.

Okay... first off, NEVER underestimate your impact on the sound. The amp isn't the only thing. That's why certain guitarists - Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Dave Gilmore - sound SO much better than other rock guitarists. Your 'tone,' as it is called, is what will set you apart. So don't just work on chords and scales... work on tone too!
Listen to a LOT of guitar as well... and not just Metal/Rock. Jazz guitar can teach you more about rock than you know. Listen to: Bill Frisell (who i think is the best guitarist alive), Captain Beefheart, and Buckethead's guitar when he plays with Hellborg, Buckethead and Shrieve.
and others. just.... listen... to tons of guitar... of all different types.

I'm sure it'll work fine for a beginner.

I fail miserably at musical instruments, not that I ever tried. Because trying is the first step towards failure.

And if you start with shit equiptment your chances of staying with it are zero. I would consider that a starters kit IMO. It's not like its a gibson custom with a mesa boogie stack.

I remember when I got my first guitar..

My parents were like, ok lets go down to the music store to get the one you want.. Got on my shoes, headed downstairs, and then right at the door was my Guitar..

I knew I was getting one, but I didn't know they already got it.. Was awesome.

to sound like metal you need a pedal.

This was my first pedal, and I loved it:

I guarantee the first song that you will learn to play by yourself on accident will be "Smoke on the Water" by Deep Purple.
