Language is a bitch to learn. I wouldn't say your country is kickass..it's nice in parts, which goes for the people too. In terms of wars it's not been too kick ass in the last century either. I would disagree but not for the standard reasons...basically I wouldn't call any country kick ass, well I'd call the french kicked arses...
German isn't a language,.. here in Holland we say it rather is the product of a jugular deficiency.
a language that is so close to ours, gg...

and yet so many fail it, then again soooo many Dutch fail at our own grammar too.

That was because I forgot to edit your post to make teh funniez. But anyways, even though Arnold is Austrian, German is still his native tongue. I have met very few Germans that actually were able to camouflage their German accent when speaking English (same goes for French people).

Don't get me wrong, I like German and it is even a compulsory subject over here for three year in high school but it seems like Germans make little to no effort to learn foreign languages themselves. But frankly Spanish/French people and most anglophones share that attitude so you are not alone.

As I recall, aren't pretty much all Europeans forced encouraged to learn foreign languages?

Not really, most "big" European countries tend to focus solely on English.

Besides, I do speak german, just don't see the point on english forums.

Well, I have to admit, some/ a lot of germans can be very rude, especially in and around the bigger cities.
"Rule of thumb" for traveling Germany is : Starting in the north people are rude. The more you go south the friendly they get until you reach the border to Bavaria (Bayern). Aside from Munich, the people there are the equivalent to an american redneck. Just awful.

Hey, I'm a redneck and I go out of my way to buy a beer for a visitor and welcome him/her to Texas, even if they're just from another state. I make damned sure to be nice if they're from another country.

Wrong, most "big" European countries tend not to bother with English at all, they learn English at school and then just forget it. (The French, many Germans, Italians, etc.) because they won't need it, ever, in their country.

However, in small countries like Iceland it is vital that you know at least English, since the total number of people in this world that speaks Icelandic is around 300,000, and we don't translate everything here, hell, we don't even ruin movies by dubbing them, (subtitles ftw). Everyone younger than 50 is fluent in English here to my knowledge.

I know, but Americans are more friendly and social in the first place (80% of my friends here are american soldiers, so I know)
and Frankfurt, like I said, is just bad. Not a good exampe for german hospitality.

That's what I meant because Desertfox was talking about language education in school. But I can understand the ambiguity in my post, I should have been more specific.

If you used the same standard for every country, there wouldn't be any decent ones. Every country has had its darker moments in history. To be honest, I admire the share of Germany in the development of western civilization. Science, literature, philosophy etc. was greatly influenced by Germany.

You got it all wrong.
The Norwegians (edit: may they rot in hell) sailed to Iceland and raped each other thus giving birth to the nation we know as Iceland today.

What is it about Frankfurt? I went ALL OVER Germany, and the entire two weeks I was I probably met 20 jerks, and all 20 were in Frankfurt. I mean we were in every big city and small town in that country and got nothing but love, except for the day we landed in Frankfurt, and the day we flew out. We might not have met a single nice person in Frankfurt, and a single rude person outside it. It was like it wasn't even part of the same country.
