For my somewhat extensive personal experience with Southern California, 'carpool' in their language means drive rapidly and unsafely.

Honestly, car pool lanes are notorious in my opinion for their high speed, not the other way around. People still apply the 'nearest to the median is fastest' mentality to them, and drive at generally unsafe speeds.

That reminds of this classic incident in 2004 where someone was speeding, but didn't like the traffic in their lane, so they cut into the carpool lane across the solid yellow line, speed in the carpool lane even worse, and then cut back out when the carpool lane began slowing down. To top it off, it was a single driver. I laughed thinking of the potential 6000 dollar fines he would have received had he been caught.

In conclusion, Southern California drivers rival those of Boston and New York for worst in the nation. Geographically, of course, not demographically. Although there are a lot of Asian women in Southern California.

Yup, our drivers in LA are quite bad. There was this one time this guy tailgated us for over 50miles... it was weird.

It's still "raining" right now I think. For most here.. it's either 20mph in the rain or 75.

Very true. Most people just see it as another fast lane.

My dad says Canadian drivers are really bad too.

Also very true, lol

He was already speeding. Why should he move to accommodate some selfish asshole who fails to realize the laws apply to them to?

I'm just saying that its not YOUR road.  Why should i have to get out of your way when i'm already going 20 mph over the speed limit?  why should i have to get out of your way when its raining, i can barely see and i'm going the same speed as everyone else?  Like i said before, if someone is going slow they probably have a reason, so why be a dick about it? Just chill out and go around. I wasn't going slow tonight to get in that guy's way. I was going slow cause it was the safe thing to do and i didn't feel like fucking my or anyone elses car up and filling out paperwork in the rain at 10:00 at night.

If I'm going 10 over the speed limit and some 'tard gets on my ass, I just slow down. It's not my fault they fail at time management and are late.

because it's not your fucking job to regulate or restrain anyones speed, it's dangerous.

and going 20+ MPH over the speed limit isn't?  If you like to speed and shit like any man with a set of balls and car does thats fine, but you don't have to be a douche about it.

You shouldn't have to adjust your driving because someone wants to speed, expecially when you are already speeding. Sorry.

you interfering with someone going 20mph over the limit is more dangerous.  I'm not generally a speeder but I'm also not dumb enough to get in the way of someone going 90mph down I-5.

You aren't interfering by driving normally.

I wonder, is it possible to take people to court for wreckless endangerment with extreme tailgating at high speeds. If so, I need to mount a camera on the rear of my truck so I can start using the law for my own personal entertainment.

The general rule for driving is basically: go with the flow, and adjust to any conditions.

If someone is attempting to go 100 when everyone else is going 50, they're a complete dumbass and they need to slow down. People shouldn't have to move over so this dumbass who can't manage time can get through. And quite frankly, it's the tailgaters that are in a hurry that wind up slowing everyone down.

By tailgating, drivers are only making things worse. When someone in front of them brakes, they slam on their brakes, and then it causes this huge domino effect and winds up costing everyone. If everyone would keep a moderate distance and not have to suddenly brake, traffic would be a lot better.

If everyone moved at a constant 50 or 45, they'd get there quicker than if everyone had bursts of 20 then 60. But people are too stupid to realize it, and decide to make things worse on themselves and everyone else.

Actually, I believe they did a study on this. I don't know where to find the results (google probably), but apparently every time someone brakes, it adds another 5 to 10 minutes to the commute (possibly more). So imagine if everyone just went with the flow and didn't have to brake (instead just let off the accelerator) because they were tailgating? Traffic would be much smoother.

if you're driving normally, then you're in the right lane, and out of the way.  if it's a carpool lane, driving normally means safely yielding to overtaking traffic.

You can't yield in a carpool lane.

While I agree that if you're not passing someone you should move over to the right, if you're in a carpool lane, you shouldn't have to accommodate anyone. So long as you're going 65 to 75, that's good enough. The carpool lane isn't for passing; if they want to pass you, they'll wait for a dashed white line to come up and pass you on the right, and if they don't have enough time to make the pass in that dashed white line area, then you're going fast enough.

People just need to have more patience these days.

uhm... If you're driving normally it shouldn't matter what lane your in.  The right lane is for people driving slower than normally ie. old people, trucks, student driver etc.

Most people normally do about 75 to 80 on the freeway.  Thats 10- 15 mph over the speed limit as it is. The right lanes are for people in the 65 range. If some douche wants to do 100, thats not my problem.

The car pool lane has double yellow lines.  You're only allowed to exit or enter at specific spots.  Again, if some douche wants to do 100 thats not my problem.

When its raining "driving normally" to any sane/ intelligent person means the speed limit and no more.  If its raining and someone wants to drive like its a Summer sunday morning , well, they're just an idiot and, again, its not my problem.

I have this strange tendency to try the ABS on my fathers car when some imbecile decides to 'tailgate' or 'bumperkleven' as we call it in Holland.
And for people that feel the need to go 160 on the left lane, kiss my bumper, I am not moving out of the way, you try and push a SUV out of the way, I wish them good luck with that.

  • Driving slow or Driving at the Speed Limit, please stay in Right Lane.
  • If you must chat on cell phone or text stay in Right Lane.
  • Use the Left Hand lane if you must pass a truck but switch to Right Lane if you continue to drive slow or at the speed limit.
  • Don't take it personal if someone wants to pass you. Let them....if you are lucky they will get pulled over by the cops down the road.

I tailgate because I'm stealing your horsepower. I'm not a hater, I just want reduced grag coming off the back of your car.
Unless you're like that jerk that failed to get me up a hill last night. YOU can all go to hell, you compact convertible-driving wusses. Get a REAL car. I'll even put up with White Van Man or Volvo Mom before you. At least THEY overtake reasonably close and displace enough air to remove drag.

Of course, if the low-slung convertible you're driving looks sexy and makes enough large displacement engine noise to drown out my headphones, you're forgiven. I'll even move over onto the pavement to let you past. Supercars deserve respect.

Normal to the rest of the world would be Km p/h.
