It crashes...it crashes...it crashes...etc.

All of my bios/chipset/sys drivers are up-to-date as of this morning.
All hardware drivers are up-to-date as of last night.
Windows is up-to-date.

I can play for roughly a half hour before bf2 just crashes to the desktop.  No warning, no symptoms, just pop!  This happens EVERY TIME I USE THE GAME, single and multi.  This is identical to AA's crashing *event*.  For them it was an error in the engine, it would hit an infinite loop.

Does anyone else have this problem?  Any ideas for a household remedy?

Thanks!
-Gam

PS, PLEASE dont day its your drivers!  I know its not, the game has been running on the same drivers and this just started happening a week ago.  Also, I am not overclocking anything, and the game prefoms worse on standard bios settings (crashes almost as soon at it logs in) so dont talk to me about the goddam bios.

Did you disable windows updater....that has been the bane of my existance...everytime it comes on I lose the game.  If I wait until it has run I can go for hours...

Now if I can only figure out how to turn it off...

In Holland we had a story in the papers about a 14 year old (driving licence at 18) driving an harmonica bus (twice as long) and never got an accident or any complaint of a custumor. only one.. he seemed so young.

but he got arrested for stealing a bus

Read this for info on configuring Windows Update. I had the same problem a while back and fixed it this way, hope it helps.

Gam Man, if using a dual core CPU (AMD X2) you can try running on BF2 on single core only. CTRL ALT DEL out of game and in task manager under process tab right click BF2 then set priority to high.  Right click BF2 again, click affinity and uncheck CPU 0, close task manager and restore BF2 from task bar again.

I had exactly the same dramas and since doing this the crashing has stopped, and the game actually runs a lot better for me. If this doesnt stop the crashes for you then Im not sure where to go from here. Hope this helps.

Edit: Sorry gam, didnt see your new system specs post

dxdiag for directx.

Cooling is a must, 14 fans in my systems, CPU never breaks 100 degree's.  Pretty good for a fan system (Going watercooled next.)

Crap!

Well...i got a 50 sittin in my wallet, so I will go buy another fan...and a few bottles of canned air and really blow out the board...

One other thing...I use a G15, and the keyboard often lags.  EG, I am walking, and I see an enemy, so I jump to avoid being shot, only I keep walking straight, and then after I am two seconds away from death I jump.

I set bf2.exe to priority:high, it made the game run like a dream..but keyboard and mouse lag was impossible to compensate for.  I got 10 seconds of lag at least off the keyboard, and 1 or two seconds off the mouse.

I am assuming that this is because I have a pitiful CPU, but its Socket A so I am having trouble finding a suitable upgrade...any ideas?

Thanks for the help!

I have a ATi Radeon 9800 PRO 256mb and I had to underclock it using ATITool because it was overheating. That solved my problem and I don't notice any difference in BF2 (running at 1280x960, mostly medium detail, 4x anti-aliasing and 100% view distance).

you could just always try to reinstall the game, but put it in a different folder(like when it come to the screen the has the "browze" button on it, just renme the folder with an added-on number to the folder name, it worked for me )

!!!umm... not sure where you were going there but... it's a good story.

as for the game crashing: This game is picky as hell. Overheating sounds like the issue but I'm not so sure. I'd play Ghost Town for bout an hour then the lag would kill me. Strangly, I checked where my computer was physicly and the fan was being blocked in back. Pulled it out a bit and game runs great.
You may want to change your paging file size to little or don't use one.
make sure you disk cleanup and defrag all the time. Use disk keeper... it rocks.
There are alot of little things you can do to change the performance.  Just mess around till you get it.
You did'nt mention wether you have your graphic settings on high, med, or low. mess with that too.
good luck.

I have it worse than you and I crash only once a week: 1.6 GHz Pentium 4, 512 MB of RAM and a 256MB overclocked ATI Radeon 9600.

Ok...so it might be cooling...

I opened my case to see my motherboard model...and noticed (after opeing the same case more the 50 tims in the past year) that I have only one casefan (excluding cpu fand and power supply).  Thank god there is a CompUSA 10 feet from my house!
