Well, Tyler was the alternate identity of himself.

Tyler was all that the narrator wished he could be. After time, however, the narrator begins to figure out that Tyler is a figment of his imagination. He at first thinks that the only way to get rid of him is to kill himself.

But then he remembers, that Tyler is him, and vise versa. Thats how the line "The gun isn't in your hand... its in mine" works.
