What's so good about OSX anyway, you can do all the multimedia/designing/creativity shit on a PC with XP anyway...

LOL...anyone that hasn't had to deal with the Mac in a domain environment should just STFU. You have no clue about what you speak. The Mac OS is absolute garbage and always has been. I have been doing tech support for nearly 20 years. Every time Mac does an update they make my life hell. Programs that no longer run or run properly. Drivers that no longer work, or work properly. A GUI that can't provide me with nearly the information I need to help diagnose/troubleshoot the system...and the list goes on.

And as for not needing an AV program. It goes something like this, "Security through obscurity"

Mine performs GREATLY when it comes to gaming. I don't even own a PC but I do own Windows on a partition on my iMac. It runs better than an actual PC. Contrary to some people, who don't know shit about what is coming out of their mouth (jaymz), they perform very nicely for almost anything you would want to do with it. As for price, I'd suggest the newer, lowered-of-price iMacs, that come with a very decent HD capacity (1 terabyte), can add a pretty damn decent video card with it, and a pretty hefty sized monitor for around the same price as you could find a PC desktop with the same specs and a 24-inch monitor.Hurricane wrote:

I'm more than willing to go back to Mac. But first Apple has to lower their prices. A lot. Right now, the might as well just call themselves Appleware because they're just like Alienware - decent PCs that are way overpriced. Only Alienwares pack way more wallop than a Mac.

Yea, the quad-cores are $2500 but the MacBooks are $1100 and the MacBook Pro's are still only $2000. Also, keep in mind, that If you have a copy of Windows right now, if you buy a Mac and make a partition or use an external drive, you are essentially buying a second, complete computer within one.Jello.01 wrote:

I never said they don't perform nicely for almost anything you you want to do with it, I said there is no way in hell you can play every game maxed out (as you say) on an IMac with a 2400xt or as yours has a 7300 gt. I can name at least 3 games off the top of my head that won't run max on it cause they won't on my 1800xt which will smoke your 7300 or 2400 (Oblivion, COD4, Dirt)xBlackPantherx wrote:

Oh and another problem with the IMac sure you can get it with a pretty 24" monitor but the next time you buy one you have to pay for it again while i reuse mine. what a deal!!!!
I have four PCs and a Mac on my desk at work. While Macs are interesting (because they're different), their low market share makes their everyday, broad-spectrum usefulness lower than a PCs, IMO. Macs certainly have the edge for niche applications, but overall, the PC has the edge for usefulness. Particularly if your a tech geek who likes to upgrade their stuff regularly...much simpler and less expensive to upgrade a PCs components than a Mac's.
That's not to say the PC is better than the Mac. I'm sure if the Mac had a larger market share, the two platform types would be much closer together on a broader variety of applications.
As to the "security" of a Mac, Dung_Bomb hit the nail on the head: Macs have fewer virus/hacks out for them because they have such a low share of the overall market. There's simply no return on investment for the dipshits that develop malware. But, anyone in the security business area knows that "security by obscurity" is not secure at all.

The argument that you need a Mac for college is complete and utter bullshit. I was unable to do gaming on this computer, and I got through college just fine with my piece of shit HP budget pc. It did everything I needed it to do, without much trouble at all. They are a more expensive alternative to what you need for college.
Your argument is flawed Omega.

um no a Mac pro with those specs is about $7500 with no monitor. (2 quad 3.0 ghz xeons, 3 terabytes of storage and the graphic abilities to render a 3d moie) 2500 get you 2 dual cores, 250 gigabytes of storage, and a 7300gt. and both of those prices are only 1 gig of ram.xBlackPantherx wrote:

Security on Macs is virtually non-existent.
Most of that is completely untrue. Most of the components in Macs are not the same as in PCs. Some are; CPU, HDD, RAM, GPU are, everything else isn't. The other bits are made by PC manufacturers though (Intel and Foxcon do a lot of the logic boards).rdx-fx wrote:

Steven Jobs once said that "We can’t ship junk. There are thresholds we can’t cross because of who we are. The difference is, we don’t offer stripped-down, lousy products." Also, reliability is a big pro. PC Magazine once did an article that stated "Look no further than Apple, the leader of the pack, whose overall score holds steady at 9.1. Last year, Apple’s score on units needing repair was an impressive 11 percent — well below that of any other company in the survey. But according to readers, the company has managed to cut repair rates even further over the past 12 months. This year, Apple’s score on units needing repair drops to 8 percent. Among first-year systems, it’s only 5 percent. That’s nothing less than astonishing."
Think about software solutions too. iWorks is what.. $50? And it can read office files and so on. Microsoft Office? In excess of $150.
Take apart an Apple system:
It's the same commodity components as every other PC manufacturer out there.
With the move to an intel architecture, they're even more of a $500 PC with a $2000 badge on it.
Commodity chinese electrolytic capacitors (rather than more precise, more reliable Japanese solid state caps)
[Fake Titanium cases (Just coated aluminum, that was too thin anyways)
Cheap plastic cases.
Failure to actually test their new iMac (monitor color scheme problems are epidemic)
Failure to treat massive manufacturing problems properly - instead blaming their customer ( Defective displays on last generation laptops)
Failure to even remotely keep up with PC hardware specs (7300 as top-of-the-line video? are you insane?)
In summary,
Apple = Over hyped consumerist bling, made from the same marginal components as anyone else, using hardware that's a generation or two behind the times, packaged in a stylish case, and pushed by one of the best salesmen of the era (Jobs).
OS-X is the same: unix core, beautiful GUI. Typical Apple - brilliant graphic design, brilliant core architecture, brilliant documentation .. hamstrung by too many sops to consumerist bling, and too many bloat features because St. Jobs thought it'd be insanely great to add just one more thing.
Also, the 7300GT is far from high end graphics on a Mac. An HD2900XT is the best I've seen in one and I know all the new MB Pros ship with 8600GT M cards in.
The "Apple manufactured" parts (which aren't made by Apple - Apple RAM for example is made by people like Samsung and Hynix, Kingston RAM is a much better bet in most instances (and about a 3rd of the price)) are all of low, low quality. They are made in China or Indonesia and are shit. The reliability of Mac hardware is much, much lower than that of PCs. DOA parts for PCs are pretty rare, for Macs they make up about 10% of components (50% if you're talking about iMac G5 logic boards).
Whilst Apple don't properly test their products and there are numerous widespread faults (PSUs, Batteries, Logic boards and LCDs are exactly the sort of thing that often have endemic problems), they do usually put REP codes on them so customers can get replacements for free. They NEVER blame the customer - arguing with Applecare will get you everywhere, shouty "problem customers" always get what they want from Apple.
What Macs are, is a perfect example of form over function.

UPDATE: In what appears be the first move toward censoring discussion of the issue, Apple Support has locked the discussion thread "Bought new iMac 20" Faded Screen", which began on August 7 (the day the new iMacs were first sold). The thread had, until it was locked earlier this week, served as the major focal point for discussion of the gradient color issue that continues to trouble owners of 20" and at least some 24" 2007 iMacs.

Your thoughts, insights, and musings on this matter intrigue me
I have a 10.4 iMac and I absolutely love it. I don't use it for gaming, but I use it for everything else. I paid about $1,700 for it, but that was after a discount of about $500. So I got a good deal. OSX is really a decent operating system. Everything is very handy on it. For what it is, it is better than a PC; though it will never fulfill my gaming needs.
I hate mac with a burning passion.

The only advantage a mac has over a pc is that the physical object looks better on your desk. Who the FUCK cares about that? I have a butt-ugly bigass gray tower sitting on my desk. It looks like utter shit. I don't give a crap. Why? Because it was cheap, it does everything I want, and I can play every game on it (except crysis lol).
I hate how mac users pretend how they're "more creative" or "hip" than pc users. Your computer looks better, but my computer can run video and music programs just as well. I can understand wanting your car to look stylish or cool, or your clothes, or your phone. But your goddamn computer?
Computers have nothing to do with being cool. Computers are inherently uncool. It's all about what's on the inside. I'll pick an ugly but powerful pc over a stylish and weak one every time.
