- Muslim Brides Undergoing Painful Vaginal Surgery to 'Re-virginize'
Wrong! No I didnt expect western culture norms. Ive travelled all over the middle east and my girl friend was Irish!!! Yes, the one that was verbally abused. I took a middle eastern studies course back in university and learnt arabic. Just because I dont agree with you doesnt mean ive mis-understood that region. Besides Ive heard a lot of anti-Spanish, French, German, Italian and yes British, rhetoric. ...and besides the fact that they got "as you say" shafted by the creation of Isreal. Isnt that an overblown excuse considering everyone got shafted after WW2, with mis-drawn ex-colonial borders and displaced lands. Seems to me that Jordan forgot about 1000 sq km of land given to Saudi Arabia, land given to Syria from Lebanon, land from Iraq given to Kuwait and the list goes on. Anti-Zionist rhetoric HAS definately been overblown in the middle-east, not to say they do have some justified qualms.CameronPoe wrote:
It sounds like you went out their expecting western cultural norms. The culture is totally different from ours and the region is several hundred years behind the west in terms of political development. What the fuck did you expect? I'm quite sure the Arabs have their Fox News equivalents. Their faux pas is that they don't thinly veil the bigotry and hatred they might be spouting. It comes as no surprise to me that they would be peddling anti-Zionist propaganda - after all, they did get shafted royally in the hole with the burden of German war crimes. I have sensed the anti-American feeling there, it's true, but then again all one has to do is read a short history of US involvement in the region since 1945 to see why. The only anti-European sentiment I got was towards the UK, they were quite delighted to shake the hand of an Irishman.NantanCochise wrote:
I lived in the middle-east and Im sorry but I was disrespected almost daily. My girl friend was verbally insulted several times and I witnessed 2 shootings. Not to mention witnessing several beatings by the police. Yes, I did meet some nice people but there is a general scorn for westerners, Christians and especially Asians and Africans, many see them as sub-human. This was in 1996, before 9/11. We in the west are definately not perfect but it isnt all roses there either. If you think fox news is bad, I suggest you learn Arabic and listen to how most Arabic news agencys report their news. You would be shocked. Weekly programs denouncing the holocaust and 911 conspiracys. Not to mention an anti-American and European rhetoric on almost every report. No Im not talking about Iran nor Syria, but the UAE, Saudi, Oman, Egypt and even Kuwait.
Regardless, the OP refers to a westernised Muslim, not to a middle easterner.
Oh, and Isnt that Galata Tower in Istanbul. A Democratic Secular Nation like Turkey is a bad example and its not in the Mid-East, its called near east or Anatolia, anyways that photo was taken from the European side of the Bosphorus!!!CameronPoe wrote:

I vote for a move to DST. This stuff could be golden in there.

I could easily post some of my pics from Palestine or Jordan, do a search. That pic was for comic effect in response to Stingray. Not so secular in terms of headscarves, eh?NantanCochise wrote:

Edit: Actually look at my avatar - that's the Dome Of The Rock, the anchor point of the entire Arab-Israel conflict.
PS You think I didn't venture over to the Asian side or something. Do you want me to post my silhouette pictures of Kiz Kulesi or something?

Lock the radical muslims in a country surrounded by a 100 foot tall electric laser fence. Or kill them all, that works too.Spark wrote:

Yep. Did most of the old historic and religious sites within Israel with some R+R at the Dead Sea and Eilat. Best holiday I've ever had. Fascinating.NantanCochise wrote:

Yeah, Its really beautiful, Tel Aviv was nice but Jerusalem with all its history made it extra special. I didnt get to go to the Red Sea though, must of been beautiful. I had to re-do my passport as I had to be in Abu Dhabi a month later for work. I was warned that I would not be able to enter the country with an Isreali customs stamp on my passport.CameronPoe wrote:

That's a really annoying thing for me too. I like visiting arabic/muslim countries - it feels like travelling back in time - but I got stamped at the Arava border crossing (having avoided stamps at Ben Gurion) so now I have to wait until 2012 to go to say Lebanon, Syria or Iran. At least Egypt is still an option.NantanCochise wrote:

Heh, you know what is funny? Everyone saying "Only Muslims would do something like this" ... lol... It has been a popular surgery in Japan for years. "Virgin" prostitutes were worth millions to businessmen... So girls would sell themselves, get the surgery, and then sell again!
That was the first time I had heard about it anyway...

Cant you just get a new passport done, I know you'll have to pay a bit but it might just save you a lot of hassle. I have dual nationality so I mostly use my European passport to travel. When I needed a new one to go to Abu Dhabi I said that I lost mine, filled out a form and paid about 30 euros. At least you dont have to wait until 2012.CameronPoe wrote:
