What kind of job can you get with a major in this subject? Politics are a strong interest of mine. Social Studies has always been my favorite class, and it has always been my best class. But if I were to get this degree in college, what kind of job could I get besides a government one (which I don't want)? I've been pretty much decided that I was going to get a Computer Sciences degree, but the more I think about it, the more I realize that I find politics/history/sociology more interesting.

I would appreciate your input KJ, if I remember correctly you have a degree in PS.

ok, seriously, if you don't want to work for the govt then as an analyst for firms which advise companies when they want to setup operations in a foreign country.

It's a good lead in to a graduate degree, such as law.

Then again, many of the pilots I've met who graduated from the Air Force Academy have PoliSci degrees...

Go for the CS degree and take polisci courses for your electives. You'll be far more marketable.

If you know the right people that could take you to the Congress or even the White House as an assessor, and then it's up to you.  But for that you need to get involved in one of the big parties.

I don't want to work in the government because I don't want to be a part of their crap that I don't agree with. I'm too liberal for them. I don't want to be able to not do anything illegal, and to serge, I also don't want to be in either big party (because we all know that only two parties will occupy the white house for quite some time).

Haha you can't get a job with one.  At least not one that is dependant on the degree in most cases.

Seriously though, I got mine with a thought of going for International law, which I didn't end up pursuing due to money issues.  It can be a good degree, but most likely a gov'ment job would be the end result, and you said you don't want one of those.  If you have the ability and the financial means, it's a good start to a law degree of some sort, but you probably won't be able to get "a real job" with one.  I got mine because, like you, I enjoy politics and the discussions about them.

I figured out early on that I would not be able to get the job I wanted with just a Poli Sci degree, but it didn't stop me from getting one.  A friend of mine DOES work for the government and has a PS degree, and is doing quite well.  Then again, he whores himself out to the Democratic Party and kind of sold out in my opinion, but he makes good money and enjoys it, so who am I to bitch?

Most jobs like to see a University degree of any kind, because it shows you are driven and responsible enough to follow through with a commitment.  If you want to be able to market yourself, a Computer Science degree would be far better.  However, if you have the drive and the means, you can always go for a double major.  Remember also that you can change your major at almost any time through your first 2 years, with a few exceptions.  You have plenty of time to make your decision, and a long time to regret it too (j/k).

That's funny you say that because my buddy who 'sold out' (or bought in as he sees it) worked in the Peace Corps.  He actually got evacuated from Turkmenistan after 9/11 because it was seen as a threat of security.  He's got some really funny stories from that place.

Haha, yeah, probably not. Guess I'll be sticking to that CS degree.

Just wait a year. It'll be more liberal than you can possibly stomach.

Warning: Political Science degrees are about as common as Psychology ones.  They're far more marketable at the Masters level than at the Bachelors level.

That being said, my best friend is now doing graduate work at George Washington University in their political science department.  With the Bachelors he has in Computer Science and his current job at Boeing, he'll be well on his way to becoming a negotiator for the government contract bids they are always vying for.

With the right educational background and job experience, a Masters in PoliSci can get you very far.  A Bachelors alone isn't so useful though.
