I know I've kinda nicked the title of CP's thread and tailored it a tad bit but wot wos/were the best period(s) in your country's history?

For me there are several - in no particular order.

1) When we kicked the Spanish Armada's butt despite having a smaller navy.
2) Successfully defended ourselves against Nazi Germany in the Battle Of Britain despite the overwhelming odds against us.
3) Beating the French several times over the course of history;
    a) Beating them on their own soil at the Battle Of Agincourt against a French army more than the twice the size of ours.
    b) Kicking them out of Canada.
    c) Kicking them out of India.
    d) Beating them at the Battle Of Waterloo and Trafalgar.
    e) Shipping Napoleon off to some remote island in the Atlantic Ocean.
    f) Etc, etc, etc
4) The Industrial Revolution
5) The British Empire
6) 1966

When the Flemish overcame Walloon oppression and became the leading group of the population.

Other than that none. Belgium's a pretty fucked up country anyway.

Gaining independence was pretty sweet. The modern era of the Celtic tiger is quite a proud one too though it brings with it new problems.

Artificial state originally created to act as a buffer for France thus forcing two groups of people who differ in so many ways to live in the same country. The fact that we still do not have a federal government 180 days after the elections because we cannot agree on key topics is quite the proof of this.

Two periods spring to mind:

The time of the Gaelic chieftains. Gaelic spoken from Donegal down to Cork. Densely forested valleys dotted with pure clean streams abundant with fish. Elks and wolves roaming the countryside. Seanchaí passing tales from Hiberno-Celtic mythology from one generation to another and filí composing and reciting poetry and music. It was a golden age for culture, with Ireland becoming the sanctuary for religious knowledge in the dark ages - the land of 'saints and scholars'.

The 1990s and 2000s - Celtic Tiger baby! From perpetual self-pitying hard-done-by emigration whores to number one economy in Europe in a phenomenally short space of time.

And two events:

The Battle of Clontarf 1014 AD - the forces of Ard Rí (High King) Brian Ború defeat the viking hordes and the King of Leinster Máel Mórda Mac Murchada just outside their colonial capital of Dubh Linn (Dublin), vanquishing their influence from our lands forever!

The Easter 1916 rising against the British, which although ending in defeat, galvanised the nation into going the extra mile and succeeding in beating the Saxon foe out of most of the country by 1922.

Or in many instances when they liberate another country.

As in WWII - NOT as in Iraq.

Well we did "liberate" the French from their territories so that they could all go back home and sort out that event in history more commonly known as the French Revolution *VIVE LA GUILLOTINE!*
