Hello together,

here's the problem:
Me and a few guys in the company I work for (20 to be exact),  intend to make a small BF2 LAN session after works.
It will be an internal session so no Internet connection is needed as well as no firewall configuration etc.
We have done it before with BF1942 and it worked well. Everybody has a version of BF2, every version is patched to 1.41.
The server files have been downloaded (for Linux  and for windows) and have been installed on two different servers (for testing).
Server files are for 1.41 as well. Within our corporate network (CN) we have several sub networks.
So when you start a BF2 game and you are in the same sub net with the server there is no
problem you can choose the server out of the server browser, connect and play.
The problem is when you are in a different sub net. The server does not appear in the server browser and there
is no possibility to connect via the "connect to IP" button because the button does not react when you press it.
Any suggestions how this problem can be solved?
Of course it will work when everybody is in the same sub net with the server but it is a bit difficult for 20 people to sit in the server room :-o
or to move the 19" server rack into the conference room we are sitting in....

Thanks a lot

Are you sure connect from IP wont work? Use one PC to start a server, then all connect to that...its shouldn't matter about the subnet (should it?) Otherwise host a game via Hamachi then all connect through that...that would work.

You could download hamachi, on all pc's, ask someone else who knows more about hamachi.

Hamachi is the key.

are you guys running only one dhcp server? is it on a cisco router?  if this is the case you could always add a Vlan to the config and everyone that plays pulls there ip from the new VLAN you could call it VLAN 2 then you can set up your own subnet, assuming you know how to calculate subnets, or You could always use the default class C 255.255.255.0.   Make sure each switch coming off there router is able to forward dhcp from the new VLAN.

BTW, if there is only 20 people in the network, why the hell are you running multiple subnets anyways???  and where is your company based at it sound like you need an IT  Network guy. so if your around either portland oregon, or orlando florida I could swing by, set it up then own you all in bf2...lol

Murdering your internal network hierarchy for the purposes of BF2 sounds a little harsh.

The LAN server browser won't work across subnets. It's broadcast based, so no matter what, you'd have to connect to a specified IP. You probably have whitelist ACL blocking between subnets for security purposes, some sort of layer 4 inspection on either switch or router level, or a forced firewall pass between internal routing. I'd tell you to ask your network administrator, but I really doubt that he'd be willing to set up configurations so that you can play BF2 internally.

Hi Guys,
Thank you for the answers. Well:

@Fateless: The "connect to IP" button does not work when single player profile is selected. Does it for you??

It is no problem when I create a server at home. My friends can connect without probs.

@Crypto:  I think  Mikkel is right; It is not a good idea to kill the internal network.
To satisfy your curiosity, we are not only 20 people in the company. Here at our location there are around 400 people
working for the same company. Around 60-70K worldwide I think. This is why we have several sub nets.
Thank you for the offer to set it up for us but I think it will be a bit hard to do it since I'm living in Germany ;-)

I assume the problem is that the broadcast message of the server is not submitted to the other sub nets. But anyway I hope connecting directly to the server  should work (entering the IP address into the "target" line in the desktop shortcut) but have to test it.

Thanks again.

connecting directly to the server  works. One problem less....
@Admin: I think thread can be closed. thx
