7 months ago that Hugo Chavez was a dictator.  Some of you called me an asshole who didn't know what the hell he was talking about and that "Chavez isn't as bad as he's made out to be."

Well, yet again something I said months ago and was ridiculed for has come to be............wait for it....................fucking true.

Here's Chavez's proposed amendments that his people thankfully bitch slapped out of the polls.

    * abolish presidential term limits, allowing for indefinite re-election of the president (not allowed for any other political post)
    * increase the presidential term from six to seven years,
    * reorganize the country's administrative districts and allow the president to choose provincial and municipal leaders,
    * changing the principles of Venezuela from "social justice, democracy" to "socialist, anti-imperialist",
    * changing the army from "National Armed Force" to "Bolivarian Armed Force"; this army would be "patriotic, popular and anti-imperialist" ,
    * allow the president to declare an unlimited state of emergency,
    * prohibit large land estates, while "allowing the state to provisionally occupy property slated for expropriation before a court has ruled"
    * prohibit foreign funding for political associations,
    * end the autonomy of the central bank, giving control to the president, and place the president in charge of administering the country's international reserves,
    * the creation of a "Popular power" which "isn't born from any kind of vote",
    * reduce the maximum working week from 44 to 36 hours and reduce the workday from eight to six hours,
    * lower the voting age from 18 to 16,
    * expand social security benefits to workers in the informal economy.

Sounds like he wanted to be a dictator to me.

No, but it will in the long run.  It's what he wants and this is one of the ways he plans to achieve it.
So you call him a dictator because he nationalised the oil, but then you admit that this action doesn't make him one. So why is he a dictator? I for one think its a good thing that those big multinationals don't suck the money out of the country and its people any more.
Especially you Bubbalo.

I really agree with you, I think Ahmedinejad and Chavez are on the same boat.

Though it was a very close vote, 49% of the voters from venezuela said yes, if he piped down his demands a little bit he might've just won.

Those reforms are old news, and yes he is a fucking dictator.  Most of you probably don't know this asshole took part in a coup back in 92.  I say shoot him in the face coz he's a dictator.

Although I wholly agree with you Cougar, and never doubted your opinion that Chavez has always been a dictator, but the following part of your post made me laugh a while and probably requires your amending attention:

Does this not imply he wasn't, and currently isn't, a dictator?

But he accepted the results and wont be running again in 2011, clearly at the moment he's respected his people and democracy.

I think he's just overstepped things. Insulting the king of spain, then trying to make himself immune to the rules? Someone clued in and voted right.

When 2011 comes around, we will see if this douche bag steps down. Or if he invents some 'national emergency' that requires his, and only his, 'skills' to fix. If he gets what he wants, he will do to Venezuela  what Mugabe did to Zimbabwe.
The US economy is a giant Ponzi scheme. And 'to big to fail' is code speak for 'niahnahniahniahnah 99 percenters'

Cougar - dictators in the traditional sense don't generally ask the population whether they want to be dictated to. The rejection at the polls (by just 2%) means that he continues for the meantime to be not a dictator.

Yes you are so correct.  Saddam won damn near 100% of the vote.  So you must be right.

I'll still simply dismiss you as crazy, regardless of how many times you're right.

I'm glad that he lost this vote, but at least he let them vote on it.

What is that supposed to mean? The point of a dictator holding a popular vote and rigging it is to appear benevolent. Losing it and conceding the loss kinda goes contrary to the whole idea behind being a dictator.

He's gained most of his popularity through oil money, which has allowed him to gain support and votes from the poor population. Chavez has also been trying convince the public that the economic problems within the country are the fault of the United States. However, last time I checked the US was their number one customer. So essentially he is using US money to appease the populace and promote anti-American sentiment. Brilliant to be honest.

Hitler comes to mind.  He won an election then through policies and voting gained the powers need to be a dictator.  No one just shows up and says "Alright, I'm your new dictator.  For life.  Bow down."

I just don't think this guy is the Hitlerian type. He wants legitimacy as much as he wants a dictatorship. Venezuelan society is so polarised that for him to try and sneak his way towards dictatorship would be nigh on impossible: he'd be blocked at every corner. The best approach therefore is the brazen 'Vote for me to change the constitution to concentrate power in my hands' approach. He'll probably try the referendum again in about 3 years and with that slim margin by which he lost this time around if I were an anti-Chavez man I'd be very worried.

The Hitler approach only worked because the totality of German life was so desperate for stability that they were prepared to turn a blind eye to the less savoury aspects of his character. Oh, and he had a militia (which Chavez doesn't have).

Actually he isn't my boy. I think he's taking Venezuela down a dark path. But thanks for the insult.

I'm all for nationalising oil and serving the interests of the indigenous folk first (before external interests) but his retardofesto was ludicrous.
