today was rather uneventful, so i'll tell you about yesterday.
i traversed 70.3 miles in a half Ironman.  it was a success in terms of mental and physical preparation and in terms of learning the hard way about race day nutrition.

i started the swim (1.2mi) and did well.  i kept a slow/quick pace to conserve energy.  aside from a few kicks in the face and elbows to the ribs, it was a good start.

https://img528.imageshack.us/img528/7377/pict0019ou3.jpg

i felt great leaving the water and onto the bike (56mi).  i had a few hard hours ahead, and i mistakenly thought eating a couple powerbars and gel packs on the ride would do the trick.  <-mistake

https://img48.imageshack.us/img48/144/img0015xi0.jpg
https://img509.imageshack.us/img509/5554/img0019fm1.jpg
https://img152.imageshack.us/img152/7104/img6094rc4.jpg
at the end of the bike/transition to the run (13.2mi), i began feeling dizzy and mentally slow.  the run itself was terrible in the sense that at around mile 7 i could hardly keep my eyes open and walk a straight line.  my body was done- but i wasn't.  i eventually found out that the aid tables had bananas and pretzels, so i took complete advantage of my entry fee.

it took a mile or two for them to kick in, but after i was nourished again, i felt great and was able to finish the run at a pace better than expected.
*note: run pictures were taken with film, so the pictures have not been developed yet <- who still does this btw!
even though this sounds like an excuse, i believe that if i was properly nourished, i would have been able to complete the run at such a pace.  this is nobody's fault but my own.

so, i learned:
[*] powerbars alone do not equal food
[*] bananas are amazing for replenishing energy
[*] i did not consume enough water during the bike
[*] completing a triathlon of length can really motivate a person
[*] i am capable of anything i put my mind to including the wisconsin Ironman (next year) and training* the year following

Great fun all around.  These pictures are quite old and Ive gotten many more upgrades since.

This is the house that Wilber lived in. Belleville, Holcomb Valley, circa 1860.

This is how he crushed his gold ore.

This is where he rests.

I also found this nearby. This was a twenty stamp mill. It serviced the mines of gold Mountain.

I...erm, didn't find any gold nuggets inside the mine. But I looked. Mines are irresistible to me. I suspect that I will probably die exploring one.

I also find mines irresistible.

There is a mine outside of Joshua Tree, near 29P. We think it is a coal mine of old. It is vertical, about 700 feet down. I rappelled to the bottom. It was scarier than fuck. It was pitch black, freezing, and wet.

When I came back up, a part of it collapsed, so we took all the miscellaneous parts laying around it and threw them in for fun.

Don't have any pics, but Sunday I went to a bbq on the base and ate/drank and became very merry.  However, just this afternoon, I got to fly a C-17 simulator and landed on the first try.  Not bad imho.

The STEP (Seminar for Top Engineering Prospects) program at Purdue University has taken up the past 6 days of my life.

https://img517.imageshack.us/img517/4690/p1010039fl3.jpg
98 kids participated, see if you can spot me in the picture.

When we weren't sleeping more than 3 hours, they had us going places across campus. Must have walked 20+ miles in the 6 days I was there. Since it was an engineering camp, they wanted us to engineer something. A roller coaster. But first, we had to test our skills.

We were assigned to build a ramp 7 feet long and 2 feet tall. The result:
https://img517.imageshack.us/img517/3783/dsc00171yy2.jpg
A look at the ramp.
https://img259.imageshack.us/img259/3387/dsc00172kl1.jpg
Straight on look at the ramp.
https://img517.imageshack.us/img517/8022/dsc00173de0.jpg
A look at our design. Took us almost 2 hours to build the origional version only to realize that it wouldn't actually function properly. So in 20 minutes, we tore down 80% of the track and re-built it. And it worked.
https://img259.imageshack.us/img259/2952/dsc00174wn9.jpg
My car design. Frree flowing wheel design that had differing wheel distance for ease of use on our track. I balanced the weight on it too.
https://img517.imageshack.us/img517/811/dsc00175ep6.jpg
The updated track design for our ramp.
https://img407.imageshack.us/img407/4209/dsc00177ho2.jpg
Another look at the track. It ran our car (as seen above, again, my design) 7.28 feet in 1.51 seconds. Fastest there in comparision to the teams working arround us.

Next night, we were given the task of a roller coaster. 8 hours of hard labor later, we had this:
https://img517.imageshack.us/img517/1015/dsc00178lf2.jpg
The drop.
https://img517.imageshack.us/img517/8259/dscn0291tz8.jpg
A better camera looking at our loop set. According to the rough math, we where getting approximatley 25.7 G's through the second loop. Thats enough force to make your ears bleed.
https://img259.imageshack.us/img259/5382/dsc00183db9.jpg
Our car (not my design. My designs failed for the loops. Not enough flex. But hey, I did have 4 wheel steering and a reflex suspension system on it. You try making that out of K-Nex.).

It worked fantastically until it was bumped by another team and lost it's balance. We caught it, but the damage was done. We couldn't get the balance back in time. We failed our eval and consequently had to tear it down. Bastards.

Other events of the week:
Volleyball.

And one last picture.
https://img407.imageshack.us/img407/2069/dscn0246bq1.jpg
Again, find me. I didn't sleep more than 3 hours a night the whole time. The coaster design/build part sucked. But the rest was damn fun.

And there's my first (and not last) activity report.

I hated the engineering part so bad that I doubt I'll go into a program like that. Evar.

So that'll save my parents big bucks (this was just a taste of the college life. I'm still in high school).
