Well I only got PS C2 last night and I looked at Z-Trooper's guide (which helped with the backgrounds) and also I recieved tips from Ersguterjunge (about moving the picture etc) and I've just come up with this:

good to hear that people use my guide ..

for a first attempt its good..
I would work a bit on the text, make it fit more (colorwise) and stand out more - maybe chose another font or give it an outline..

well im not that great at PS either, but i think it would look better it the top of the gun wasnt cut off in the top of the picutre

Yes, well, I didn't realise that bit until I deleted the background ... I'll try not to do that next time around !

Yeah keep the text a simple font, arial works supprisingly well on anything, keep the colour of it matching in with the rest of the picture, the red just doesen't look good on a blue themed image, fiddle with the blending options to get it to match in better too, a drop shadow on the whole image wouldnt look bad either.

Also I'd have the legs lined up with the bottom of the border and just the top sticking out (gives a pop out feel as opposed to 'man stuck on top') try and fix up the end of his gun and it'll look pretty nice
