Before wading in with your biased nationalism please consider how the movie industry of your country of choice fosters and promotes the film-making principles you consider important to the art form. Do you love blockbuster extravaganzas or experimental, artistic movies? For example I love the US independent scene but loath the formulaic trash that Hollywood churns out. I love the arthouse movies that come out of France but find their attempts at big budget projects lacking something. Japan and Korea are very prolific these days but seem to be slipping into the Hollywood mindset with their formulas. What do you think?

USA and UK, only half of the usa films though, most american films are fucking garbage but theres some good ones too, and likewise for the UK film industry.
USA-Hollywood: I wanna be entertained. If I want culture I'll go to a museum
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.
Uk, I love films like Lock Stock and Snatch, Shaun of the Dead is one of the funniest films ever made, I've heard Hot Fuzz (same people as Shaun of the Dead) is equally brilliant though I've not had time to watch it yet.
US films seems to lack 'soul' for want of a better word, it's tuned into a movie factory, that said I love the pirates of the Caribbean films so it's not all bad.

You don't think a movie can deliver both?max wrote:

Obviously a Movie can, but not to the extent that you would get if you took time to go to a museum...Braddock wrote:

UK all the way, Snatch, Lock Stock. Cant beat British gangster movies. Although Americans do have Tarantino so thats a big thumbs up in my book.
A good director should deliver both in that case ...value for money and all that. A movie is also undeniably easier to enjoy than a museum. Cinema is unjustly not ranked along the 'high' arts when it comes to cultural value.Gooners wrote:

France and Spain both produce very high quality films. Probably way better than those produced in the US on average (considering the amount of crap churned out in the US that's not hard). There have been some good British films over recent years too. I haven't been impressed with most modern Japanese films - except Battle Royale (I'm a huge fan of Kurosawa though), there have been a few decent Korean films out too - Oldboy immediately springs to mind.
I think I'll have to say France.
I think I'll have to say France.
I suppose so. But I usually watch movies just for plain brainless entertainment. I usually don't want to think, I usually don't want any messages. I usually just want stuff to blow up and cool special effects. Sometimes I will watch something that is a more intelligent and I agree that Hollywood is not the right place for that generally. I just think that traditional movies are not a good medium for that. Written text and documentary style movies are.Braddock wrote:

EDIT: how could I forget about comedy? UK films FTW!
I'm not really a fan of dubbed over movies, nor of subtitles, so anything not in english or german (or easy french) is not for me. Also I could never understand why people like asian stuff. So thats not for me either

Queen
The Beatles

USA and Québec!...A good part of the USA film are filmed here in montreal!
Rofl you missed India? (Bollywood)
japanese movies make for a good night.
India and Bollywood for really differant movies, man they can turn a fist fight into a colourful Song and Dance routine and their action movies are fantastic (in a strange sort of way), I really recommend having a watch of some, just to see a differant side of film making.
As for what country makes the best movies, well I'm sorry to say its too hard to call, I have watch great and rubbish films for all of those listed.

USA !!! USA !!! USA !!!
All the commercial, blockbuster shit aside they still make the best and most "proper" movies.

US, Stanly Kubrick was American. Second is UK as Alfred Hitchcock was British.
Italian Spaghetti westerns for the win.
US = Porn = Win
20 years ago america. but in the last 10 or 15 years some crazy movies have come out of the UK. america has better technology and a bigger film industry. but that doesn't make a movie good. by % definatly UK.
USA has the best sci-fi, fantasy, and horror industries, but the brits win hands down for comedy, they're just funny for some reason.
I envy the musicians coming from UK .. ( led zeppelin i would have named also.. ^ )Black Vaine wrote:

Question: Why the Hell is New Zealand not on the list? Lord of the Rings anyone? No? King Kong then maybe? The Last Samurai? River Queen? World's Fastest Indian?
We've got more in the works too: Halo and The Dambusters are ones you may have heard of.
Directors? Well we've got Peter Jackson, (LOTR, King Kong among many others,) Martin Campbell, (Goldeneye, Casino Royal,) Andrew Niccol, (Lord of War, and a writer of The Truman Show,) Lee Tamahori, (Die Another Day, Along Came a Spider, Once were Warriors,) Andrew Adamson, (Shrek 1 & 2 and the Narnia film series.)
Strangely enough even after that brief overview countrys like South Korea still makes it named on the list while NZ does not. Sucks to be a little country eh.
