I searched for a post describing my problem but couldn't find one.... that being said....

Whenever I first start playing on a map, gameplay is very choppy/laggy. The choppiness seems to coincide with people spamming "First Aid Here!" and such at the beginning of the round. However, after about 5 minutes of play, the choppiness goes away entirely and everything is smooth for the remainder of my time on that map. However, once the server switches to a new map, the choppiness returns, and again subsides as before. To lessen the impact of this problem I've been playing on servers that loop one map 24/7, since I only have to deal with the initial startup.

I am wondering if anyone else has or has had this problem and knows how I might fix it? I've set all of the graphics options to low, scanned for spyware and defragged without any luck. Thanks to anyone who responds.

That's pretty much it. Also, your computer needs to establish a steady connection with the server, therefore you get a little lag at the beginning.

That's what I tell myself anyway.

i don't know how true this is, if even any truth to it all, but a former clan mate of mine and i were discussing this some time ago.
I was having the same problem and he asked me if my PC "thinking light" (for lack of better term) in the front was going crazy and staying lit?
I said yes. He said  that it is Punkbuster scanning your PC. When PB determines that your PC is clear and stops scanning, the game plays fine.
Now this is probably bull shit, but at the time it made sense and seeing as no one else has a better explanation, thats all i can come with.
I still have the prob, but it only lasts about a min or two if that.
Hope it helps.

Thanks everyone, I had a feeling it was just the map being loaded into memory. Good to know I'm not the only one. I guess I can deal with 2 or 3 minutes of lag

Getting more RAM will eliminate or at least lessen the lagginess.  2GB is perfect nowadays.

Its a hardware issue, Used to have this when I had a piece of junk PC, Now I never have loading lag.

Agreed. Its lag caused by buffering textures as you begin to play. As it loads it loads up textures etc, when you start the game if you have a low amount of ram, you will ALWAYS get a slight choppiness as the game starts. More ram is the answer.

Under XP I didn't have this issue, but now that I've moved over to Vista I get awful bad laggage for the first few minutes of a round, even under the lowest settings. I have an e6400 @ stock 2.13ghz, 7900GS and 2gb ram, when playing on XP it was fully capable of running BF2 at the highest settings and 4x aa enabled without a hitch

It is a RAM issue. The more RAM you have the better it will be for loading etc. I upgraded pretty much everything on my new computer especially the RAM and I dont lag anymore. In fact, Im usually the first person to spawn into the round. If you are experiencing lag during the first moments of a round and it happens each round....it is definitely your lack of RAM.

Vista requires a lot more ram to run, thus why it supports 4 gigs of ram while XP only supports 2, If you had 4 gigs of ram it would eliminate the lag.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure XP can support more than 2G of ram, it's just that anymore would be somewhat overkill. I think you need the 64bit version of Vista anyway to utilize all 4G. But yeah, 2G of ram on Vista might be the reason; XP doesn't utilize as much.

I was about to say this myself. I think either XP Professional or all 64-bit versions of XP or something support 4GB. Vista only uses all 4 gigs if you have 64-bit version. And I thought I read somewhere that the two home versions of Vista don't support 4GB either (even the 64-bit versions).

as others have likely said, It's textures loading onto ram.

Yep I have the same thing. And I'm sure everyone else already said it, but it's just the computer still loading everything. You can click the "auto ready" box and then wait for it to automatically throw you in the game, even if the Join Game button pops up earlier.
