List your favourite guitarists here.  (preferrably no "OMG Körk hammett r leeeeeeet" -stuff)

I would go with:

1. John Petrucci
The guitarist of Dream Theater. Very nice skills there. Extremely fast. Probably my favourite guitarist.

2. Steve Vai
Probably one of the best guitarists on earth, I don't even have to tell anything about him, everyone knows already

3. Eric Clapton
That man is THE MAN. He has played longer than anyone, better than anyone. I love Clapton.

4. Jimi Hendrix.
Obvious. His guitar was like part of him.

5. Joe Satriani
Again obvious. If he isn't the greatest, he has at least taught all the better ones to play

6. Yngvie Malmsteen
Damn fast. Damn fast.

7. Dimebag Darrell
Maybe not the most skillful, but the attitude of his playing, incredible.

8. Alexi Laiho
Uhm, fast, original, aggressive. Almost everything a guitarist should be.

9. Ron Thal, aka Bumblefoot
Original. Amazing riffs there, yet pretty unknown to masses

10. Brian Setzer
Not exactly my favourite music, but wow, the Stray cats is awesome live!

11. Eddie Van Halen
Almost forgot. He is almost unbeatable legend.

That's it folks. And that is not even close to all my favourites, my hands just refuse to write anymore today.

I'll list only three. So many to truly choose from, but I don't have time.

Pete Townshend

I have to list the guitarist of the wildest band ever, The Who. Pete is a great showman and a fantastic guitarist that has left his mark with his legendary windmills and the finale of smashing his guitar, acts that many know of, but less know of the origin.

Eric Clapton

Is there much to say? Hugely entertaining, and a remarkable impact in the blues and rock world.

Peter Frampton

While he does not use the talk box most, he is the most famous for it from his legendary album Frampton Comes Alive. But that isn't his only schtick- Frampton is an excellent guitarist without the talk box.

1. Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin)
2. Jimi Hendrix
3. Slash (Guns n Roses)
4. Ben Harper
5. Flea (Bassist for RHCP)

Edit: 6. Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath) only because he still had amazing skill even with two finger tips missing on his fret hand.

I would choose... (not in order, just whoever comes to mind first)

Chuck Schuldiner, founder of the death metal band Death, one of the very first bands of the genre. Cancer took him away.

Timo Tolkki, guitarist for Stratovarius. Simply an amazing, and very very talented player.

Kurt Cobain, frontman of Nirvana. Although not a very skilled player like the others, he could make 3 chords really rock good. He is the reason why I started to play guitar.

Kai Hansen, from Gamma Ray (ex Helloween). One of the leading figures in power metal.

Olavi Mikkonen and Johan Söderberg, guitarists for Amon Amarth. This duo of players simply write amazing riffs and give the bands its distinct sound.

David Gilmore, of Pink Floyd. One of the bests, amazing guitar solos.

Randy Rhodes, guitarist for Ozzy (and early Quiet Riot). Pure musical genius.

and Dimebag Darrell, from Pantera (and Damageplan). Very very skilled player. And he gave us some of the most memorable riffs ever.

Alex Lifeson - Rush lead guitar.
Eddie VH - of course!
Prince - I may not like his music but believe it or not the man CAN play a mean GEE-TAR!
George Thorogood - Of Bad to the Bone fame. Slide guitar genius!
Les Paul - of Gibson Les Paul fame. Pioneer of Electric Guitars etc.
B.B. King - Blues man extraordinaire!
Eric Clapton - Modern Blues god and ex-cocaine junkie.
The Jims - Page and Hendrix... True rock guitar gods!
Carlos Santana - A smooth man to listen to.
Angus Young - AC-DC fame. Biker/Bar rock slinger from hell!

In my opinion speed does NOT equal good/great for guitarists. Most 80's hair band flunkies fit into this mold... BTW 80's style rock and roll died in 1991 with the advent of Grunge.

Actually I think Prince masters quite a few instruments. A good musician indeed. and yes speed does not mean good/great, I second you on that one.

It's not that he's not worth mentioning. There are so many good guitarists out there that you could write a book with endless names. This is realy all about opinion on the best of the best, and he's simply not up there in my book.
