In laymans term plz
Basically, you'll want to apply slight down elevator when inverted, and slight up elevator when you're upright.  In other words, push forward on the joystick when upside down, and pull back on the joystick when right-side up.

When inverted (upside down) the wings lose some of the aerodynamic characteristics (lift) so you'll end up pitching slighty downward.  By using down elevator when inverted, you'll force the back of the plane down, which forces the nose of the plane up, which will keep you at an even altitude.

Technically, it was an aileron roll.  Unfortunately the term "barrel roll" is incorrectly used most of the time, where people come to accept it as the correct term.

I don't fly helicopters, but the same principles apply.  You would apply cyclic pitch accordingly, depending on whether you wanted the nose to move up or down.

In a nutshell, an aileron roll is a tight spiral, on the same longitudinal axis.  A barrel roll is a roll that is not as tight, and it varies in altitude as well as direction.

A quick-and-dirty example would be 2 different types of springs
The spring in a ball-point click-style pen would be an example of an aileron roll - a very tight roll with very little change in direction or altitude

A slinky would be an example of a barrel roll - a very large roll with a lot of change in direction and altitude.
