I was waiting for this.  This isn't a social issue, its a $$$ issue.  Instead of energy companies embracing alternative fuels as a new source of income, they continue to do everything they can to sap existing supplies.  Instead of manufacturing/chemical companies embracing hemp as a faster, cheaper, more profitable alternative, they continue dumping money to maintain the status quo.

I personally don't smoke, I don't encourage it. However, it should be YOUR choice to smoke if you'd like to... As long as citizens aren't directly affected by it (ex, accidents drug-related... As well as it shouldn't be allowed to minors - like drinking/smoking age)

Just IMO though...

Edit: However, I also believe that if one is caught using/abusing alcohol, drugs, tobacco, their Welfare benefits should be reduced greatly until they can spend their money accordingly. (Unless they actually have a physical/mental disability that requires the use of it)

The recreational part is a lot more shady. I personally think that each individual government needs to do extensive test on the psychological issues and the long term effects it has. If this report comes back with no negative impacts then fine, I'm all for it. But if there is a problem, even a small one then we should've by now learnt our lesson from cigarettes (the fact that it obviously kils you and the huge social and health costs) and keep it illegal.

My buddy was going to Mexico and "forgot" about a baggie in his car.  Who would have thought they would have drug dogs sniffing cars GOING INTO Tijuana?  He said the guy had to hold back the dog when he pulled up.  The US Customs guy was understanding about it and just threw it away.  Too bad more police aren't like that guy.

I think people forget that if it were legal, that doesn't mean everyone would be forced to use it. There would be people who don't use it, people who have tried it and don't like it so they don't use it, and people who use it.

But whichever group you are in, everyone should be able to make that choice for themself.

I guess it's ok for half a million people to die every year from tobacco and alcohol, but marijuana is bad because it doesn't kill people?

Legalizing pot is a great idea, but it will never happen. Three very large lobbies won't let it happen. Big Pharma: If you can't patent it, it isn't allowed. Textiles/Farming: Hemp is softer and more durable than cotton. Tobacco: A substitute for tobacco with no ill side effects? Not gonna fly.

Together these three lobbies can dole out enough conflicts of interests that no politician on earth will legalize marijuana in the US.

Not really. The government makes the law, not the people, sadly. The Dutch government are just better at making laws that make sense.
EDIT: What I believe will happen is based on examples from a perfectly normal country that manages fine, you're basing yours on paranoia, which ironically is a trait associated with potheads.

Hemp is legal over here (as far as I know) and the cotton industry have no competition whatsoever, its expensive to produce remember.

I thought Carter was on the verge on legalising it, but then he got linked to some coke scandal thing and had to appear to be really tough on drugs from that point on.

Could be wrong though.

"Wasting" life is pretty subjective isn't it?  I don't think anyone here has any belief that what we are debating is going to literally change laws.  It's all about the social interaction, the collective thinking, the exchange of ideas.

Nowhere is one word.  Your first sentence isn't a full sentence.  A 'point' is not something one solves.
