Don't these engines go through testing for such an eventuality?

Not sure how old the engine is, but it may have shattered a blade or two.  You have to think of the speed it was going, also the speed at which a jet engine would ingest an object.

They do.  But if the engine was old and one engine had a weak blade, that weak blade can come loose, and take some other things with it.

Watch this bird take down a jet. They eject at the end.

We spend millions of bucks developing high-end missiles that don't necessarily guarantee a kill, and yet a fucking bird takes out a multimillion (billion?) dollar fighter jet.

That wouldn't be pleasant for the passengers.  They've got to be shitting themselves at that point.

Guys...it is not "just a bird," it is the speed it hits.  If you jump off a tall bridge into the water, why can you possibly kill yourself or hurt yourself?  Its just water right?

i know this has been posted before but it shows how much air is being drawn in to the intake. And these are smallish engine nothing like the cavernous units on a 757.

A single paper clip will shred a jet engine.  That is why the crew on an aircraft carrier will line up and walk the length of the deck several times a day to check for any small items.  You could throw a rock at an aircraft engine without damaging it, but when air is being sucked in at several hundred mph, a bird will wreck it.

The engine no, the planes designed to be able to land safely and manoeuvre with one engine though.

Nope.  Engines go thru bird tests during certification.

I figure a blown engine would be nothing more than a nuisance on civvie jets. It must be a sucky way to go for the bird though.

"La la la, I'm a bird"
"What the fu-"
"AAH OH GOD MY BONES AAGRGHGH MY LEGS MY WINGS AAA-"

edit: That is to say, the jet would still fly fine and land fine. It wouldn't be "IMMINENT CRASH - DANGER DANGER".
