Get a good security system, arm it at night and have your wife arm it "Inside" mode when she's alone.
Get self-defense training, though I don't know what would be the best. I took Shotokan Karate for a few years, pretty nice stuff, but IDK how good it is for street fights. I'd love to do some Delta Force training, though I'd probably die from the intensity of just warming up.
Get a tazer. It zaps people but doesn't kill them (except in some rare cases where they have pacemakers or internal defibrillators, and when was the last time you heard of the crook with poor heart health?). Zap intruder, call cops, zap again until cops come.

I hate to act contradictory, but you SHOULD keep a small handgun somewhere in your home. There are many places a 5 year old can't find a weapon, even if it's just because he can't reach it. Hide it in an overhead light fixture, in a high up cupboard (hidden behind something, of course), etc.
If you have the time/patience, you could do what my cousin did - Take a thick book that you don't really need (like an old encyclopedia or something), then glue the pages and the back cover together using spray adhesive, and cut out a square in the middle. If done correctly, the book will look normal when it's closed, but when it's open, there is an empty square in the center. Put your handgun here (you might want to know how big it is first, to pick a book accurately). Then, put that book on the highest shelf of a bookshelf or some other equally inaccessable - yet inconspicuous - place.

TBH there is always going to be reports of rapists and muggers, just use common sense, don't go into dark alleys, don't take long walks alone at night and if she has to walk anywhere at night know hich routes are well light and usually have lots of people on them, have a house alarm and panic alrm fitted, have decent locks fitted in your house and back garden halogen lights with a motion sensor.
