I need not say more, because the insane offspring of religious extremists shows enough about the establishment of religion.

If everyone interprets the bible differently then why the fuck have a bible, just make up your own shit.

How on Earth can you compare the WBC to the rest of Christianity? It's like comparing Gary Ridgway to Mr. Rogers.

Actually, please.  Say more.  I'm curious how a few religious nut jobs prove that all religion is 'unstable and overall shit'.

well, I think it really shows how scary religion is.  It starts with a couple nut jobs and their following grows and grows until it passes the hard to find line between cult and religion.

I find it best to respect all belief systems, be they Christian, Islamic, Buddist, Atheist or whatever.  Religions were the only moral basis for hundreds of years, and some people cannot function without religion.

Well simple. These people think that what they believe is what god wants. And they believe that the rest of you people who believe in Christianity are wrong.
How can you have so many different versions and beliefs of god? It doesn't make sense. The funny part is you all think your version of god is correct.

The problem is the people who use religions to justify acts of terror and other acts of violence.

why can't they function without religion?

The only logical answer I can over come up with is the fact that religions generally gain members using fear as a tactic (ie. Hell...).  People really don't need a book or priest or pope to tell them what they believe do they?

I have always found humorous the idea that everyone goes to hell but 1 religion.  It's like winning the lottery.  SEveral hundred religions, but only 1 gets you into heaven.

Thanks to the media and forums such as this, I'm pretty sure the entire world hates WBC.  They have about a 0.00000000000000000000000000001% chance of gaining acceptance and becoming mainstream.  Few people outside of their own families could tolerate their insane view.  In a couple of years they'll die out just like every other psychotic cult.

Some people need a set of rules to follow, and these people are often not capable of coming up with them by themselves.  Regardless, religion makes some people very happy, and adds what they consider "meaning" to their lives.  If it doesn't hurt anybody, and they enjoy it so much, there is nothing wrong with it.

He's right.  You may get a few nut-jobs along the way, but I agree that generally, religion is a good institution.

because it takes time and evidence. everyone now laughs at the sun god but i bet after it was proven wrong people still believed in it. just like now, we have so many facts contradicting the bible yet people dont acknowledge them or spin the situation around to fit into their beliefs.

give it time.

Sadly, your observation is correct.   One "Christian" group claims this thing is what God wants, and another "Christian" group claims that another thing is what God wants.  What is really going on?  Simply, each group has something that it - not necessarily God -  wants, and they attempt to give their desires credibility by doing some gymnastics with scripture.

I'm a Christian ... and I can't defend your observation, because it is true.  But consider, just for a moment, that perhaps there is a truth somewhere in all this Christian chaos ...

I'm an atheist, but I completely understand the need for religion. People who take it too seriously... they can go away, but the moral values and answers religion provides can be extremely comforting.

When I was nearly suicidal I went to church 2 times a week for 2 months and that made things a ton easier. I didn't have to believe in god, just listening to the sermons was enough of a spiritual experience to find some peace with what I believe is an entirely random and unforgiving existence. The pastor of that church is someone I will never forget, because he was able to captivate people from all religions. One day, the church even had 3 sermons, one islamic, one christian and one jewish all revolving around the theme of coexistence. The three speakers (the pastor included) were some of the most gentile people I have ever met.
What i learned from that sermon is that the values of religion don't corrupt people, but the elitist idea that these values are strictly YOURS makes people bigots. The three speakers that day all lacked this elitism, and it was one of the most memorable experiences of my life to date, even though I didn't and don't believe in god.

That is actually the correct word. Think.  I have a pretty good idea that I'm correct and it has yet to be dis-proven. If something comes along that absolutely and conclusively proves otherwise, I may change my idea.
The problem comes when people (like WBC) start interpreting things in their own twisted way, convinced everyone is wrong no matter what, then shove their fingers in their ears screaming "GOD HATES YOU, GOD HATES AMERICA, GOD HATES [insert anything here]".

Many people in their natural state aren't moral beings. Religion provided the basis of morality for a few thousand years where we now have the implementation of laws regardless. But when people are born, they have no clue about what we consider "moral".

this coming from a guy who, naturally, thinks HIS version of god (or lack of) is correct.

The problem with you atheists is, you refuse to educate yourselves about religion.  You simply observe and comment.

It's ignorant, and fallacious.
