I won't try and make this interesting as I usually try and do so I'll cut to the chase!

I want a new processor.... my AMD Athlon 64 3500+ is getting slightly old

I'm looking at the  Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 but I didn't know if it was worth saving a bit more for the cheapest quad core:  Intel Core 2 Quad Core Q6600

£235 and £315 respectively.

My other question is, I'm 99% sure my motherboard will need upgrading in order to take a core 2 duo cpu: (Abit AV8)

So can you guys recommend a decent mobo that will work with most of the new hardware.

(Please don't just say  Z0mg  Asus Striker Extreme 680i 775 yeahh boii because I know it is 'the best' but I would like to know if a less good one would do the job because I can't afford the best sadly )

Any help greatly appreciated!

http://xtreview.com/review157.htm  lots of bar graphs with different cpu's

as for the mobo, depends on if you want to go sli,  some boards run 1 card at 16x, but 2 cards at 8x !

If you are upgrading to C2D, you'll need DDR2 RAM, which the Athlon 3500 doesn't use.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't there not a lot of programs that take advantage of a dual core setup and even less programs that take advantage of a quad core setup?

I would get the E6600 (actually I did) because it's very close to the E6700 and significantly cheaper. You can overclock it if necessary, but it probably won't be necessary.  I would wait for the quad cores to come down in price. It's much too early to get one.

The motherboard I got is the Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 (rev 3.3). It was $122 (64 of your British funny-moneys) and it has everything except SLI (which I don't need). It is awesome for overclocking.

I got 2GB of Corsair pc6400 for $110 (55 pounds) and an eVGA 8800GTS 320MB ($259 = 130 pounds). This setup plays BF2 on max settings, so what more do you need?

You'll most likely need a new cooler as well, as it's a different socket. And you most likely have the stock cooler anyway, which isn't adaptable to the best of my knowledge. Something like this should do nicely.

It really depends.  As far as games, not really much at all supporting SMP.  However, there are a lot of video editing/encoding/graphic rendering programs that can and do support SMP.  Even then, multi-tasking is sweet with multiple cores.

Just the other day I was simultaneously encoding an AVI to MPEG-2 in Pinnacle Studio, encoding an MPEG-2 to DVD in Nero, running a program that reassembles RAR files, playing music from my Rhapsody account, while browsing the web.

My system didn't even hiccup with all this running.  Then again, I have a Q6600 @ 2.8GHz.

I would get a gigabyte P35-DQ6 actually.

If you plan to OC, go with the Gigabyte DQ6.
