Never let a fact get in the way of a high horse

... plus they should have looked at his desktop.... they may just recognise the icon top-right

If it only happens when you first start-up (it that's what you mean by enter desktop) then its probably something odd in one of the start up areas.....

Easiest way to see all start-up things is to use something like sysinternals autoruns (now MS owned)
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysint … oruns.mspx
look at the 'Logon' tab.... if your not sure what some of them are them post up the output/screen-shot of that.

Edit: spelling

OK, has this just started happening recently? Have you changed anything? Done a Windows Update recently? Upgraded hardware? New drivers?

It sounds like a software or driver problem to me. The fact that the error is in explorer.exe doesn't necessarily mean that explorer.exe is causing the problem.

I would uninstall video and other drivers and software one-by-one and see when the error stops occurring. Yes, your stuff won't function properly without drivers, but the point is to figure out which driver or program is causing the problem.

Personally, I had a bad experience with ATI so I'm betting that's the problem out of pure prejudice.

Run this and post the log here. A lot of spyware/viruses like crashing the explorer process since they often hook into it.

If it's just the explorer process going tits up then it's pretty much something dodgy like spyware, if other processes are bombing out then it's probably crappy drivers or dodgy memory. (to properly test memory download memtest86)
