I wonder if they're going through global warming too.

If you believe in the Biblical God, what would discovery of humans, or human like creatures on another planet do to those beliefs?
Nothing. Church isn't God.

ok, now what?
question to you: what if this planet claimed to physically interact with God(s).  would that change your mind?  it would change mine - depending on the extent of the interaction, etc., of course.
I'm sure many people on Earth have claimed to have interacted with God/god/gods/etc...
you are sure, and you are right!  based on historical text, people have claimed to physically interact with God (Jesus/mohammad etc.), but my open-ended question/statement remains:  if these aliens claimed to have witnessed miracles on levels unknown to my God/Jesus, then i would reconsider my faith.  on the flip side, if they have a similar God and text/Bible/qur'an etc., it would confirm my faith.

Unfortunately they don't go into any detail at all on how this was discovered. I'll see if I can find the story from a source that isn't aimed at drooling idiots tomorrow.

It's got the same climate as Earth, plus water and gravity. A newly discovered planet is the most stunning evidence that life - just like us - might be out there.
I'm not believing that part. I mean, how much can they tell from a spectrometer?

That's really far!

http://img.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2007/0 … 68x313.jpg

That would be a nice view!

Just because Gliese 581c is habitable does not mean that it is inhabited, but we do know its sun is an ancient star - in fact, it is one of the oldest stars in the galaxy, and extremely stable. If there is life, it has had many billions of years to evolve.
If you believe in the Biblical God, what would discovery of humans, or human like creatures on another planet do to those beliefs? What if we could talk, and their society was millions of years old and they had different Gods?

1. They work out whether a planet is there through tiny distortions through light. When light passes around an object (even a very small object), it distorts.

2. Spectrometery (someome crucify me for spelling it wrong if it is spelt wrong) is one of the useful tools known to astronomy. It can, with amazing accuracy, tell you what the composition of a star is - absorption and emission lines which change with chemical composition I can tell you are 100% accurate. The way they work it out is basically look for changes - and then map those changes.
The paradox is only a conflict between reality and your feeling what reality ought to be.

All life present today can be traced back to one living thing, its possible that life has arisen more than once but it does fit in with the theory of how life started on earth. They don't know much about the conditions on that planet, there are so many things that need to be right in order for life to arise and even if the conditions are perfect there is still a very small chance that anything will come out of it. I'm not turning into a christian, but alot of how life on earth began is down to chance. It requires that atoms and compounds were randomly fused together using the energy from ultra-violet rays, and that eventually there were molecules which could grow by attaching to other moleculaes and that they could stem off and form smaller chains which could in turn grow, and that over time these molecules caused other inorganic molecules to be wrapped around them (the birth of the first cell) and that cells became more complex and so on.
Anything that could reproduce would start to outnumber anything else that couldn't, and so life and evolution were born. But to assume that another planet might harbour conditions that can induce this is pointless, as even if it can it means nothing.

that evaluation is based on experience....

Seriously, it was to be expected that other planets would be habitable, given the size of the universe.

Gravity might be an issue, should humans try to settle there. If it differs too much from our earth, we'd be in trouble. Same with oxygen levels in the atmosphere, and the important question wether Gliese 581c's atmosphere filters out dangerous radiation as earth's atmosphere does.

Also, we need to get there in reasonably short time. 20 years, even if we were able to travel at the speed of light...that's cold...

A lot to do before anyone can call "dibs" on anything, I am afraid...

btw, I don't really believe in god, so that's not an issue for me. But if there is one, he was obviously wise enough not to bet on one horse only...

You can get there by detonating nuclear weapons in space, at least that was proposed by Carl Sagan. But we got that ban against that. Blowing up a nuke in space is like pissing in an ocean of piss. It won't really matter.

Carl Sagan also said faster than light travel was impossible, but they said that about faster than sound and many other things. He could be wrong. But I'm partial to the school of thought that things are too fucked up here for us to start moving to new planets.
