Ok, so I'm not that great a techie so here is the question at hand.  I have a Nvidia 7950GT 512mb memory and 600MHz core clock speed. (DirectX 9.0c) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814130066

But I'm thinking about returning it for a 8800GTS 320mb memory and 500mhz clock speed.  (DirectX 10) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814130082

The difference I don't know about is the 7950 has 24 pixel pipelines vs the 8800's 96 stream processors.  What's the difference and what is better?

No particular reason, other than that the 8800 is better than the 7950. Trust us.

yea you should get the 8800 but not that one there is a better one made by evga with ACS cooling and is clocked faster than any other 8800 GTS model. Iis more money but it would give you better results.

Wait until tomorrow, 23rd of april when ATI releases the new cards. Further, I wouldn't get anything new until there are games that actually support DX10, especially since the 7950GT is a nice card anways.

I know that the 8800 series is better, but I can't help but think that the 7950 GT super clock is going to be better then the lower end 8800s

Save up a a bit more and go for at least the 640mb 8800: that will offer a more substantial and worthwhile improvement.

And defiantly wait for the new ATI cards to be released.

It will drive the Nvidia prices down ALOT!

As i understand it the pipelines on the 8800s are better than 7 Series, as the 8 Series are Unified pipelines, so one pipeline can do all shaders / fills etc, whereas in the 7 Series they have dedicated pipes for different operarions. This means the 8 Series (with more pipes, and unified ones) is more efficient / better than other cards. Plus its DX10.

geforce 8800GTXs prices will be soon matched against ATI Radeon HD 2900XT which will cost about 400$
GTS 640MB will cost even less
geforce 8800 Ultra will fight with ATI Radeon HD 2900XTX both with >600$ price
Price war FTW!

ATi cards arent out till may, today was just a conference that amd/ati held about the R600's.  8800 is the best card out at the moment.  640mb+ models are only for higher resolutions, 320mbs perform better on lower resolutions than the 640 ones.

Just keep the one you have until the new wave of DX10 cards come out. You're not going to notice a difference in performance at all. If you're going to shell out some money for a new card then wait until something comes out that truely blows the 7950 out of the water. Until then, what you have is an incredible card and well capable of pushing hardcore graphics.

ehm, it can't do the unified pipelines in dx9, it's pre dedicated. it can only use the unified pipelines in dx10 games.

ur card migh actually be better, it might not run DX 10 games as good as 88 series but that card has some power, 512mb is alot of video ram

I have 8800gts superclocked by EVGA, its doing fine for now, I have a feeling my cpu is bottlenecking it a bit tho

I wouldnt upgrade yet, wait till you see how crysis will run

ok so i am looking around on newegg again, i've had a delay in building the system so I get bored and look at parts.  With a AMD Athlon 64 X2 2.6 dual core, will that bottle neck an 8800 (looking at the 640 and higher)

Shouldn't.

All Cpu's bottleneck the 8800 series. I own a 8800 GTX and the exact same CPU as you mentioned and the bottleneck is small but it is there. If you have a chance and the money go for the Intel core based system. At this moment 8800 and Dual core from Intel are a win along with some nice 2 Gb of ram.

As waiting for ATI ... well that depends how cool you are. If you want to build your system now than go for Nvida if you can wait than wait for ATI to see what they will offer. But one thing is for shore - prices on 8800 will drop but NOT THAT BIG OF A DROP. And of course to match with ATI, Nvida will most certain release an update to their lineup and the prices will be balanced again.

Buying GPU is a win:win or a lose:lose situation. My advice is - if you have the money and can't wait - buy what is best on the market  - at this moment 8800 and Intel Dual core.

I have to wait because my car broke down, transmission is shot, engine sprung a horrific oil leak, and someone slashed a tire.  It's an old car so I'm going to try and get rid of it and use the extra money to buy a bicycle (cycling like for triathlons) to get around town and finish up the computer with a little bit better parts.  Currently I have the afore mentioned CPU and two gigs of pc2 8000 ram from crucial.
