If you drive a car in the US, you have to wear a seat belt.  Newer cars even beep at you until you buckle up.  Why do car manufactures do this?

Also, in some states, people who ride motorcycles do not have to wear a helmet or any type of protection.  Why are they exempt?

Why don't school buses have seat belts for the children?  There are rules and laws for kids in cars, yet when they get on a bus it is free game.  Same goes for public buses and subways.

So why do car drivers get the shaft?

I have no problem with seat belt laws.  I just think they should apply to other modes of transportation also.

1) I don't know why on motorcylces.
2) On school buses, the seats are built to a special way I can't remember right now which is supposedly as safe as a seat belt.

Well, it's impractical for a motorcyclist to wear a seat belt.

But I've no idea why they don't have them on buses and stuff.

I would agree that buses need seat belts.  I'm guessing that was something both the vehicle manufacturers and Ralph Nader overlooked....

Or the people who enacted this law in the first place - Insurance Companies.

That is the reason - Insurance.

Motorbikes are dangerous anyway, - if you crash, the bike goes flying, so it's probably better if you fall off. Furthermore, you don't go through a windshield.
On the buses I remember we had them - just not on public transport, but then, they're trained drivers, so they're supposed to know what they're doing.

That is not true all the time.

Motorcycles. If you fall, you have time to push yourself away from the bike, saving you from further harm. If you are attached, 600 lbs of hot metal drags you against the pavement.

There should be no laws requiring you  to wear a seatbelt..........The laws requiring you to buckle up your kids however, is very correct, for obvious reasons.

I'm going to disagree with your statement.  I personally wear a seatbelt, but you are not an idiot if you don't. Your just jeaopardizing your safety.  There are many people who don't wear them because doing it could do more harm than good.  My dad for instance has had a kidney transplant.  Do you know where they place the donor kidney?  They place it through the front of your stomach area,  in the cavity, right where the lap-belt comes across.  By wearing his belt, my dad could dammage, and even worse, kill his kidney in the slightest fenderbender.

He chooses not to, and I respect him for it.  He's hardly an idiot for his decision. And, neither are the rest who choose to do it for medical purposes. Be it neck, shoulder, or other problems.

There shouldn't be laws telling you how to protect yourself.  I agree.  You only injure yourself.  However, when insurance companies see their profit margins sinking, they tend to do what a corporation/industry does best - Lobby Lobby Lobby

To the poster...

Have you ever seen brains on the street?

Guts on the hood?

Don't you think people get tired of cleaning it up?

Do any of your friends drink and drive?

Do you want the people to die that they run into?

It's a simple belt...

One day you'll look like superman flying out the front window of your car, coz some drunk hit you...
But then again you gotta look cool...

1. So you don't crash your stupid head through the windscreen and end up 50 different kinds of dead on the pavement. Instead, you'll end up with a few broken ribs and maybe a whiplash.

2. Anyone driving 200 miles an hour without a helmet is an idiot and should die anyway, I don't see the big problem here.

3. If you're bitching about something simple like putting on a seat belt which is by far the easiest thing to do and doesn't bother you at all, then please bust out that annoying beep and crash at 200 miles an hour so we don't have to listen to you asking us why people give a crap about your life...

Ah. That question is more clear.

Because;

1. A bus is big and is likely to plow trough another car when it hits one rather then stopping instantly and making everyone fly.

2. A bus is less likely to randomly hit a wall/tree because the driver is drunk.

3. You can't monitor/force people to wear them.

Basicaly, they COULD put it in, but it's not really that needed so they don't want to put any money into it.

A Bus, Is not YOUR personal property...

A Car, is registered to YOU..

YOU are driving YOUR car....

YOU are not driving the bus...

and thats it.

By that logic I could get in the car with some guy with a sleeping disorder, crash, burn half to death, not wearing my seat belt because it wasn't my car.

Little far fetched don't you think?
