So I saved up for 4 months to buy a PS3 and finally ordered it online last month. I got me a nice package with the 60gb model (what happened to the 20gb model? couldn't find one), some blu-ray movies, 2 games, and extra controls and what not. I got the PS3 at last on saturday, finally and hooked it up and was up and running pretty quick. It was kind of annoying to have to update the firmware already, since it's such a big file and takes time, but anyway, by 6pm Sunday I was finally watching Casino Royale in HD and playing Splinter Cell as well. So I left some games demos downloading later on to see what game to buy next, and then after that I booted up folding@home and left it running for the night.
So things are great, I come back home from school excited and hurry up to play some Sam Fisher, but something is odd as I walk in to the room. Everything was quiet; No jet engine roar from the PS3's fans. I figured it must've shut down by accident or something, so I just went up to it and tried to power it up and no luck. Thinking the touch-sensors were messed or my fingers weren't working, I tried flipping the back switch off and on again, but still no change. So I went into immediate troubleshooting mode plugging in to different outlets, unplugging cables, switching TV inputs, EVERYTHING was tried. I even tried using my CPU power cable in case the cable was damaged somehow. But it was all in vain, the PS3 was long gone by the time I got home.
Naturally, I called PS3 support (amazingly, they answered without any holding time), and they quickly told me that I'd have to send the system in for repairs. He asked me at some point if I tried plugging it in into different outlets and I said I tried that as well as using a different cable. He asked if it was a sony cable and I luckily said yes cause he then mentioned something about warranty issues using non-sony cable. I don't see how using an exact same cable to test a BROKEN PS3 could void warranty, but oh well, dodged that bullet. Anyway, CS rep said that they would send a box and I should be back up and running within 3 weeks.
Sweet! I can be playing the PS3 I paid for in 3 weeks! I was pretty mad, since I want to play PS3 now, not in a month when they send me a new/refurbished/repaired one. I mean I had it for under 24 hours. How does a $600 machine break so quick? Btw, another funny note was I wasn't sure if I still had the proof of purchase, so the guy said without it they couldn't be sure if I was still covered under the 1 year warranty or not. I don't see how I could be out of a 1 year warranty for a system that's only been out for about 4 months... I finally got him to understand that, and he came around to my side.
Anyway, so now I'm out about $800 bucks, with no PS3 and just a bunch of controllers, games, and movies. The PS3 even ate Splinter Cell since you can't eject it manually and without power, it's just stuck in there. I doubt I'll see that game ever again. Now I gotta wait for that prepaid box, gotta ship that back, they gotta take a look at it, and then mail a PS3 back to me. Woot!
...I knew I should've just bought a Wii off ebay instead, even at the $400 they sell.
