Serious question.

I would say I am a liberal, and have trouble understanding were some of the more hardcore conservatives are comming from in their posts somtimes. Just dont have the same frame of mind I guess.

So I would like to hear some of the reasons being a conservative might be the right way to go.
Feel free to post a "give me a reason to be liberal" thread if this goes well but please do not post this as a response in this thread. I'm asking because I would really like to know, and because with all the different views expressed in the D&ST sections, I might get some good anwsers.

Edit: also if you have one(reason), Why did you become or why are you conservative?

p.s. did a search but couldnt find anything, feel free to close this if im wrong.

Once you get your liberal reforms through the government, you'll want to keep it that way. Then, you shall be a conservative.

maybe so... I'm one of those "to each his own" types. So I'm down for change if its fair. So I don't really see that happening, also what made people here decide to be conservative in the first place?

The only important thing is that you think about what is best for the country, not anyone's own political agenda. Sort of a "hear the issue, then decide", rather than "decide on the issue before you've heard it", kind of thing. Too many people think of themselves as just "conservative" or "liberal". Just be a person. Better yet, be an American.

You have your opinion on most issues i assume, think through why you have those opinions and if you are able to stand by those opinions and defend them.

Important thing is they are your opinions when you understand why you have them and what values you base them on, doesn`t really matter what category other people place you in regarding those opinions !

With that in mind you can choose the following categories:

Conservative: Idiots
Liberals: Idiots
Moderates: The cool dudes

I am usually accused of being a liberal on this site but I actually consider myself to be quite conservative on many issues. I take each issue as it comes. Too much emphasis is placed on the label of liberal/conservative. I just feel feel the system must be continually scrutinised and questioned to keep it on its toes otherwise you end up with a Government that becomes complacent and out of touch with the people.

To me it means personal responsibility.  A more or less complete dis-trust of modern  politicians.  It means viewing the Constitution of the U.S. as almost a sacred document.

I guess I getting a little bit more moderate as I get older, and I blame the buffoonery of the last two American presidents.

I just want to be left alone.

Thats what I dont understand about some right wingers is that they dont want free healthcare or welfare. I shake my head and wonder why not. I quote Michael Corleone:  I have always believed helping your fellow man is profitable in every sense, personally and bottom-line.

The problem with the three major parties in the UK now is that there is little difference between Labour and the Conservatives, and the Liberals (no offence meant) will never have ebough power or popularity to actualy form a government - plus liberal politics is a buncho of wishy washy policies where nothing gets done.
And if you ask anyone from a mining community why they dont like the conservatives they'll tell you why and its becasue last time they were in power they screwed the county over.

Now socialism there is a form of government that could work

If i could be bothered i would be put that as my member title.

Edit

On a serious note what on earth do you expect?  IMO You and your far right forum cronies have a warped understanding of people outside your own (porus) boundaries and expect the rest of the world to support your dimwitted plans.

You cant expect nothing but criticism helped with a healthy measure of mockery.  Enjoy.

I think the real message here, as so many of our esteemed members have noted, is not to try to fit into the crappy mold of one of the existing parties, but to eschew labels and make informed decisions on an issue-by-issue basis. Only mindless automatons take blanket orders from their leader about what they should think on every issue. Be a man, and be your own man. Make your own decisions.

so that i don't have to work and then see lots of my money go towards taxes used for some lazy ass who works the system to stay at home and profit from social welfare.

the number one cause of corruption is...<<drum roll>>...GOVERNMENT!!!!!!

In theory (so don't give me the Bush is the largest spending president in history reply): liberals (meaning left of center) want big government with lots of social spending.  conservatives (right of center) want smaller government with less social spending.u

In other words, if you earn $100 dollars the:
-liberal would want $50 in taxes and would in turn say that they will provide you and the general poplace with all sort of social programs: health care, pension, unemployment support etc.
-conservatives would want $30 in taxes and would offer far fewer social services thereby making you take responsibility for some of those things for yourself...although they also cover dire emergencies.

While the liberal approach may sound better because it offers more security, the truth is that the government does a horrible job of managing the money they get from you for use in these programs.  If you were responsible and intelligent you could take the extra $20 saved in taxes and use it much more efficiently to save for retirement, better health care or even unemployment.   The reason for this is because those are your $20 and you are going to hold those getting this money accountable for the services they provide.  The government on the other hand is inefficient, bureaucratic and corruption-prone...they're just not very good or motivated to provide these services.  I'm all for state assistance if its necessary but too often the liberal system creates too much incentive to not work and live off of social welfare...and you, the tax payer is footing the bill.  And beyond the social services, ANY money spent by the government is spent poorly.  There's not much I can do about roadways for instance because you need the government to take care of that stuff...but beyond the bare minimal that a government needs to provide basic services to its constituents, i'm not interested.

there's arguments both ways but for me i say fuck social security or state pensions.  i'll invest my own money and pay for my own health insurance thank you very much.  i'd rather manage my money than let some under-educated un-motivated civil servant decide what's in my own best interest.

the other shit between liberals and conservatives (abortion, religion, family values) is not so relevant for my political affiliation but unfortunately they package shit together.  So if I want conservative economic policy then i also gotta put up with religious zealots cause they're part of the Conservative package in the US...i think this post vvv makes my point in this regard.

If you want to be liberal you must
-hate America (because growing tired of a wacko president/administration and out of control foreign/domestic policy directly correlates to hating the country
-love spending hard earned, taxpayer money (Budget deficits anyone?)
-believe Al Gore is Jesus reincarnated (he's a fucking politician, people)
-have no support for our troops (because refusing to support an unjust war where the fights are politicized directly correlates to wanting the troops to die)
-want the nationalization of ALL business (if you are liberal, you must be die-hard socialist)
-believe Hillary Clinton should be President (because liberals are too stupid to see a power-hungry devil woman when they look at her)

If you want to be conservative you must
-show unwavering support to GWB and any president/politician that calls themselves Republican (aka staying the course)
-show unwavering support to the State of Israel (We are a Christian nation right, and Jesus was a Jew, right?)
-Believe that being born in a society of great wealth isn't a privilege, its a right (oh, look at all the poor people, make sure you lock the doors of our luxury SUV honey)
-believe that if you are poor, its because you want to be that way (clearly only unmotivated people become poor)
-believe Iran, North Korea, and Syria are all imminent threats that must be dealt with by force (there we go again, attacking those superpowers)
-Hate all Muslims (they are all violent I tells ya!)

It's a start.  At least in the good Ole' USA that's how it works.

generally, i view conservative people as ‘solutionists’(problem solvers rather than complainers), big picture thinkers, and sustainers of the ‘American dream’.

This is a common thing for Liberals to say; however, people like CameronPoe are probably living nice normal middle-class lives and think they know where poor people are coming from.  CameronPoe doesn't know about poor people and niether do I, but the United States offers ANYONE the chance to make a great life for themselves and move up in the social structure of the States.  Anyone who says that society is keeping the poor people poor is just placing the blame somewhere where it should not be.  The blame is on the person who is poor, because choices they have made decisions in life that have put them in that place.  Take Oprah Winfrey (spelling) for example, she was very poor and now look at her!!!  Just the simple fact that she did that proves Mr. CameronPoe wrong.  Its not about the fact that Oprah is a very successful example, but its the fact that it is possible to do that.  That point can't be argued against by anyone who has reason in thier minds.

Note to CameronPoe:  Since you want to help poor people, what kind of charities have you donated money to??  Do you donate on a regular basis?  Do you give homeless people on the side of the street money?  Do you volunteer at food banks?  What do you do to help get the poor out of poverty?  Give me a list buddy...  Go ahead, I'm waiting...
