It is attempted frequently when the defendant confesses. A recent case here is Florida saw such a tactic. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jessica_Lunsford . The confessions stand the majority of the time.
That dude was a nut.
You know with all the nasty hateful stuff that is all over the news you can get kinda numb to it. But when I first read her story, what he did, and how he buried her "in a black trash bag, holding a teddy bear, face down, with no pants on" I literally felt pain. Probably because I have a little girl around her age.

Coerced or not, if they were American servicemembers, they would be disobeying the Code of Conduct for stating that they were wrong and Iran was right. I think it'd go against Article 5... along the lines of I will make no statements disloyal to my country, which in this case they're saying that British commanders were wrong in sending them to patrol that area? At least that's how I view it. They should just shhh.

Totally ridiculous, I guess you really like death. You would have preferred the possible death of the sailors and the inevitable deaths a military strategy would no doubt incur just so as you could take out some Iranians ...unbelievable attitude.

I agree, these confessions aren't worth the paper they're written on. They're no better than Guantanamo bay confessions in my opinion.
I agree, because God knows what I might admit to, if the Easterly direction was kept hidden from me.

Well it shitty. Even more so is the fact they broke the faith.
Nothing could be said about it now other then they just made themselves look guilty and the iranians no matter what will have the video footage to prove they were innocent and just protecting they're waters.
I'm curious as to the fact if that boat they had carried a GPS device, or a "blue force tracker"  If it did then someone somewhere should have seen them drifting into iranian waters and said something, or someone shoulda relized they were making way for iranian waters and said something.  Either those confessions doom them

The American press is responsible for sensationalizing our prisoners, not our government, just like they are doing with the UK soldiers.

Uh-huh.  Which is why the US paraded Saddam Hussein, and why they keep on extracting confessions (kinda like making British sailors admit to being in Iranian waters, no?).

It was Britain that paraded Saddam in his Y fronts in the media!!!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/talking_point/4567687.stm I'm sure there are plenty more links too

EDIT: It was a US troop that leaked the photo though if I'm not mistaken.

First thing I read was the US condemning this action. That resolves the parading issue. Now how about the beating issue?? I didn't read the whole article was the beatings by the US exposed in this article??

I don't think Saddam was subjected to beatings, I think he was probably too high profile to risk that. The Abu Ghraib fiasco was probably the most damning example of US maltreatment of POWs and that can't really be contested seen as prosecutions have been made against some of the soldiers involved.

'Confessions' are extracted at Guantanamo bay also. David Hicks the Australian Guantanamo captive was made to sign an agreement that he would not accuse the US of maltreatment in return for being allowed to serve a fixed term back in Australia.

That's not what official policy dictates they should do. They're supposed to confess to anything. When your official policy is that all troops should confess to anything it makes it so much easier to deny everything later.

I don't see any bruises on the marines, and I'm sure we both saw the videos of Saddam's doctor visit.

Most everyone's opinions on the matter are already too crystallized for an apology to make any difference one way or the other. It's hurt Iran more than it has Britain, and has merely added one more excuse to the list for invasion.
