So the government today has announced that it is giving Loyalist paramilitaries in excess of a million to "move" away from terrorism. Now given that even though the IRA has completely decommissioned all its weapons years ago and stated that their war had ended, not one single bullet, or, weapon has ever been decomisioned by loyalist terrorist factions. (granted most of them were probably licenced by the British) my question is - should they recieve this funding before they get rid of their weapons, legally held or otherwise?

The government has announced that it will give more than £1m to a project aimed at moving the UDA away from violence and crime.

I saw that this morning on the news, I thought I'd heard it wrong! How much money was the IRA given to move away from terrorism?

My favourite quote is
..."It is going to a legitimate organisation which has existed for some 20 years and which has been at the forefront of peace-building in Northern Ireland and in the Republic of Ireland."

I actually find this surreal. The IRA hand over everything and the Unionists pick holes in it whereas the Unionists hand over nothing and get a million pounds up front. I've talked about double standards in the North before but this goes way beyond what I thought possible in terms of taking the piss.

Maybe we should give Al Qaeda a million quid to get them to lay down arms? The UDA must hand over everything in their arsenal before any concessions are made. Why should the IRA be subjected to hardball politics and the UDA to handouts.

Yep and theirs Pasiley about to flush all our futures back down the toilet for another 10 years because he will not sit down with Sinn Fein because they have "not prove themselves". It is never mentioned that the DUP sat on communities with the UDA & UVF for years.
Anyway. Throw some money at them. A million is nothing these days in the wider scheme of things. Money is a big motivating factor and by accepting and asking for this money, the UDA shows itself for what it has always been. A mafioso type gang syndicate using Religion and bigotry as justification to racketeer, rob and suppress, mainly their own people with impunity. The UDA and UVF these days are much more of a threat to their own communities than the nationalist community anyway.

They have the loyalist peoples under the impression that they are protecting them. While dealing their kids drugs, taking money from local business for 'protection'. I work in the building traded and its common knowledge so far, that paramilitary payments are wrote into Bills of Quantities for building projects in Loyalist areas. Making regeneration more expensive and less attractive to developers. Then the UPRG winge and complain about how Loyalist areas need regeneration. Get the UVF and UDA payed and fucked off so the loyalist people will see they don't need protected and a united Ireland is financially better for all of us.

As an outsider, I would say no they don't deserve the money.

Yep, this is why I trust the British government even less than the American one.

The BBC is still a good news source though.

what a fucking scam the British Government is at, they should give them nothing but jail sentences..

The Ulster Defence Association are "still significantly involved" in extortion rackets, a senior police officer has confirmed.
It comes a day after the government said it was to give £1.2m of public money to a project aimed at moving the UDA away from violence and crime.

So that's where my tax increases are going.  I do not approve.
