Well, since cortisone is a mild steroid, its probably the surrounding tissue and nerves reacting to the shots. Sounds normal to me.

A medical forum or your doctor may be able to answer that better than we wikiites. But who knows, maybe there's a brain surgeon among us.

no hehehe  pinched nerves. its hard to explain. im a machine operator  (forkifts, backhoe that kind of thing).
they say all the years of looking strait up has changed the natural curve of my spine. evey thing is squizing in the back of my neck and basicly the nerves are all pinched back there.

I just bought a traction device for my gf off an infomercial the other day. I can't remember the name of it for the life of me but they made it sound pretty good on tv. Have you ever tried anything like that? I'll try to find a link for the one I bought.

Its probably all mental. Seriously though.

Those discs are soo close to your brain, that the steroid could be interrupting signals on the spinal chord

It would also explain the pain. With me, at least, when I got it injected in my knee, it swelled the muscles a little, causing some bad pain from my upper calf all the way down to my ankles.

Dunno, take a shot of JD and walk it off

Jess,

I've got a nice 2 sided approach for you. When I was 16 I tore my ACL and medial meniscus, and broke my femur. I've had knee problems since then, and have had injections. Also, I'm a paramedic, so I know a LITTLE about the medical side.

The injection is most likely not just cortisone (as that would burn like you can't even imagine). Most likely its a mixture of lidocaine or benzocaine and cortisone. The first part is to numb the area, and the steroid (cortisone) is to decrease the inflammation around the affected area. So, the doc thinks that your pain is caused by inflammation of the tissues around the vertabre, as opposed to damage to the vertebral disks themselves.

Neither of the chemicals should cause nerve conduction problems, as they can't penetrate the mylar sheathes of the nerves in the spinal cord. It's the nerves that terminate around that part of your neck that are hurting, and therefore are treated.

The upper body weakness is logical, as there is a numbing agent in the injection that would last for 3 or 4 days. As to the shooting pains in your scapula, I'd ask the doc. I don't know. It could be a sympathetic reation from the lack of sensation in the C3 area, but I just don't have the training to know.

Regardless, best of luck, and feel better.

Hormones are bad. I hope you fix your problem quickly so you can get off them before they ruin your life.

Oh, and the weakness could be because you are becoming weaker. Cortisol is a catabolic hormone and promotes protein degredation in favor of sugar formation and storage. The increased levels of cortisol/cortisone are probably generating a degree of muscular atrophy. In short, the cross-sectional area of your muscles is decreasing and the size of your muscle fibers is decreasing hindering your ability to produce force.

Oh, and you may see an increase in fat stores.

Lets clear up what cortisone does.  It is NOT a pain reliever, it is NOT a muscle relaxant, and it is definitely NOT any type of local anesthetic agent that would interfere with the transmission of nerve impulses and "numb" the area as people have suggested.

Cortisone is simply a strong anti-inflammatory.  Steroids in general are immune system suppressors.  Inflammation is the first sign of an immune response.  Steroids intervene and reduce inflammation.  This is good in the case of pinched nerves because it may relieve some of the pressure on that nerve.

Any pain or weakness/numbness etc you may experience in the extremeties is likely a result of the pinched nerve, and not the cortisone injections.

But anyway, sorry I couldn't give the perspective of a brain surgeon or whatever...........but the perspective of a dentist will have to do.
