Swiss in Liechtenstein 'invasion'
The traditionally neutral Swiss army has staged an unplanned invasion after troops blundered into Liechtenstein.

A 171-strong Swiss company got two kilometres into its neighbour before realising the mistake and heading back.

Liechtenstein authorities made light of the intrusion, saying they only knew about it when the Swiss told them.

In 1985, the Swiss had to pay Liechtenstein compensation when rockets fired by its army went astray and set a forest ablaze.

'All so dark'

The latest incident began on Wednesday night during a routine training exercise for the infantrymen in the Alpine forests close to an unmarked section of the border.

The company commander led his men in the wrong direction in bad weather but gave the immediate order to return when realising the error.

"It was all so dark," one soldier told the Swiss newspaper Blick.

A spokesman for the Liechtenstein authorities said: "It's not like they invaded with attack helicopters."

The BBC's Paul Legg says the incident is embarrassing for the Swiss but not as bad as the one in 1985.

The countries became embroiled in a lengthy dispute when the protected forest was set on fire.

Many armies are taught to know how to use GPS, but not to depend on it.  With anti-satellite tech becoming more prevelent this is a very prudent approach to navigation.

dude, the swiss should have a GPS tool built into their knives or something

and why are the swiss performing military maneuvers?  They are obviously planning to attack the neutral countries and take over the world, we must take arms and defend ourselves from this impending thread immediately!  I say we declare full nuclear war upon switzerland and take their entire 1000 man army out before it can destroy the world!

Wow, good thing they didn't accidentally invade France, otherwise the Swiss would have to come up with a way to govern 60 million people.

one has to wonder though

what would liechtenstein have done if the swiss had invaded them?  I mean its one small neutral nation invading a tiny speck of a neutral nation...  a clash of two armies with their total number of participants numbering in the hundreds

Actually Liechtenstein doesn't have an army.  I actually know a guy who is friends with one of the Prince's of Liechtenstein, supposedly he's an avid gamer and plays quite a few online games, go figure.

lol...glad I am not the only one.

Back in 1998, we were sent to the Kuwait / Iraq border near Karbala.  I was in charge of a patrol at night.  We got caught in a sandstorm and I fucked up and got disorientated.  By the time I figured out where we were, I was in Iraq by at least a mile.  It was close to sunrise and I did not want to be responsible for potentially starting a war.  I eventually found a good escape route and we headed back to base.

Point is, this stuff can happen very easily.

I heard the Swiss initially said they were searching for weapons of mass destruction, but all they found were clocks, chocolate, and yodeling.

How the hell did this get into serious discussion? Or, how has it stayed here? There has not been one serious argument stated above.
I'd have to say, the fact that this was publicized shows poor secrecy on one hand, but on the other, the government handled such an embarrassing situation quite well. I have no doubt that this will have no impact whatsoever on Switzerland's relationship with Liechtenstein, and I think less people in Switzerland know about this than in the rest of the world, simply because of the big deal that's being made out of it.
(I'm swiss by the way)

You'd think their swiss army knives would have GPS by now...
