 Possible Dooms Day Scenario
Apophis
https://i13.tinypic.com/2jbjjub.jpg

A £150 MILLION space mission should be launched to deflect an asteroid which is set to pass dangerously close to Earth, experts warned yesterday.

The call for action to protect the world from Apophis - named after the Egyptian god of destruction - came from a coalition of astronauts, engineers and scientists with close links to US space agency NASA.

Scientists have estimated the asteroid has a one-in-45,000 chance of striking Earth on 13 April, 2036. Travelling at 28,000mph it could release 80,000 times the energy of the Hiroshima bomb.

I bet the launch site for such a mission would be a prime target for terrorism.

I completely agree. Humans have to bond together and work as a whole someday if we want peace on Earth.

I'm pretty sure that's what religion was intended to do back in the day. Then there were 18 religions and, well, we all know what religion does for us today...

No, we should take the global warming approach IMO.  Wait until it's too late.  Thant seems to be the general consensus among the powerful.

EDIT: '£150 MILLION' Jesus H. Christ are you kidding??!  That kind of money is reserved for wars and killing people only.  No exceptions.

Hey didn't the scientist and their data originally state that global warming was most likely caused by man and now there is nothing we can do about it?

Edit: Found it.

"This is just not something you can stop. We're just going to have to live with it," co-author Kevin Trenberth, director of climate analysis for the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo., told The Associated Press in an interview. "We're creating a different planet. If you were to come up back in 100 years time, we'll have a different climate."

Do you have any idea how many religious fanatics, end of the world cults, and psychopaths in general there are that wouldn't hesitate to take advantage of such an opportunity? Sarcasm only works when it's intelligent.

Think what would happen if it just brushed the atmosphere. It would throw off the earth and moons orbit, probably altering the current units of time, and possibly sending the earth into the sun or deep space.
that or it could take out the moon, which might be pretty freaking awsome to watch.

If the Moon got knocked out of orbit, the tidal currents would be thrown all off, disrupting the  the seasons, the Earths temperatures, and even the air, that is replenished through interaction from the seas.

In short, it would be an ELE and we would all die.

Isn't the only thing that we can do is shoot nukes at it until it diverts course or blows up? Come to think of it, that'd be pretty cool to watch at night.

Well, the USA could easily afford to save the world if they upgraded one squadron to F-22s next year instead of this year and sunk the funding into NASA instead to carry out the mission.
I mean, surely the generals wouldn't whine TOO much about a delay of just a year, would they?
Or just delay a new ship or two.

Hell, they could even just put in a 'saving the world tax' of $5 per taxpayer, and have enough left over to give the Shuttles a new lick of paint.

How about the US does it and charges the rest of the world a tax for saving their asses.

There would be easier targets than this that would be unguarded.

Subways/tube, buses, parks, trams, shopping centres, car parks, sewers, bridges.

why do people always have to crap on about terrorists. The more you wank on about it the more the terrorists win.

This post wasn't about terrorism before you open your trap or are the asteroids from Al Quida. Everyone watch the sky for TERRORIODS

Although the term may not completely apply at this point, I still believe that the United States is still pretty much a global hegemony.  Basically we are the worlds "most powerful nation" - for the time being.  Along with this title comes a responsibility to the rest of the world.  Not necessarily helping industrialized countries like much of Europe, but struggling countries (Africa).

Unfortunately this power has gone to our heads and resulted in unnecessary wars (Vietnam... Iraq).

So in the end, sure the rest of the world should pitch in if it comes to that but so should we.

My point -- with all the money we're spending to 'help' Iraq, money could have been pumped into research for things like medicine, alternate energy sources, etc...  We could have even put money away for an impending disaster fund..

I didn't say anything about Al-Queda. Terrorism is not just limited to Muslims blowing themselves up in crowded areas. Like I said before, there are many religious fanatics, end of the world cults, and psychopaths that would be foaming at the mouth for such an opportunity--one attack sealing humanity's fate. So stop jumping on the defensive over nothing, you're making yourself look foolish.
