No, he's suggesting you to think a little less one-dimensionally.  Some people prefer the structure and tradition that Islam promotes.  Of course, this can be offered by other religions, but conversion is often an opportunistic thing.  Religious conversion preys on people that are insecure in their current perspective or need a crutch of some sort due to financial or emotional desperation.

In Iran and Saudi I believe that people convert so they can have rights and not end up being repressed.

Get caught with a Bible in Saudi Arabia, or walk down the street doing the rosary(sp).

Iran is more Progressive for the moment, but could round up all non-believers and execute them at the whim of a couple Clerics.  Try living there knowing that.

I can imagine Cristians, Jews, and Hindus promoting their religion face to face with people that have other beliefs.  Muslims seem to be less tolerant of people that disagree with their beliefs and I have not a clue what they could say positive about their religion?  Look at the world and the news stories involving Muslims, what the hell could they site as the good that their religion does in the world or the peace that it promotes?

I believe most people in Iran and Saudi Arabia are already Muslim.  It's not a matter of conversion so much as it is a faith passed down from generation to generation.

It is true that the Middle East is not exactly known for its religious tolerance in most areas, though.

Iran certainly could do what you suggested if it wanted to, but why would it?  The Ayatollah is somewhat extremist, but he's less concerned about people of different faiths than he is toward acquiring Iraq.

There are positive things about Islam, but you're not going to find most of them on the news.  As with any religion, it provides hope for desperate people, but personally, I think religion (not just Islam) is a false hope.  Yet, if people willingly convert and are happy with their faith, who am I to bother them about it?

If you want a more specific achievement of Islam, how about this: Islam preserved and advanced science while Europe was still fighting itself in the Middle Ages.  The Islamic World was much more functional when the Ottoman Empire ruled vast areas -- they almost even conquered the whole of Europe.

It's symptomatic of any religion that tries to gain converts; the idea that somehow in their miserably short span of life on this planet, they've figured out the truth of it all and YOU need to recognize it. I've met nice folks from all faiths, including Islam, and it's really not something endemic to just one of them. Everybody thinks they have the puzzle solved when all they've really got is just one piece they're looking too damn close at.
